Contact with the scale platform alone allows a user to power the scale, identify a user of the scale, determine a mode of operation of the scale, and to establish a reminder. The scale has a user mode of operation displaying a reading of the user's weight. The scale has a pet mode of operation displaying a reading of the weight of a pet. In the user mode of operation a second mode provides a display of the user's current weight, a delta or differential weight with the most recent recorded weight measurement and if the data is available, additional deltas for weight measurements taken up to one year earlier. The scale also has an instant on mode of operation in which it allows for instant weight reading.

    • A hot beverage maker and dispensing system (10) is provided having an integral beverage reservoir (110) that uses positive air pressure to dispense the brewed beverage from the reservoir (110). The positive air pressure is generated by an electric pump (150) that is energized when an actuator (210) is depressed by a container to be filled with the brewed beverage. The actuator (210) also causes a first valve (42) to pause the beverage during brewing into a brew head (300) from being directed into the reservoir (110). The actuator (210) also causes a second valve (241) in the lid (115) of the reservoir (110) to seal the reservoir (110). Thus, positive air pressure generated by the electric pump (150) forces the beverage in the reservoir (110) through a dispensing outlet (215) into the container. When the actuator (210) is release!, the brewing of the beverage may resume and the beverage may again be directed from the brew head (300) into the reservoir (110).

    • A method of preserving foodstuffs in a heat-sealable plastic bag wherein three of the bag's four peripheral edges are permanently sealed together and the fourth of the edges comprises a temporary interlocking linear seal. After foodstuffs are placed into the interior of the bag, the linear seal is interlocked to form an inner chamber and to isolate those foodstuffs therein from the outside environment. The bag is then pierced to provide an opening through which the inner chamber of the bag is evacuated. Then, while the inner chamber is evacuated, heat is applied to seal around the opening or between the opening and the portion of the inner chamber containing the foodstuffs to isolate the foodstuffs within said evacuated inner chamber from the outer environment. The foodstuffs may be removed from the bag by opening the interlocking seal and the bags may be reused numerous times by re-interlocking the seal and repeating the evacuating and sealing process.

    • An allergen particle detecting apparatus has a sample area through which environmental air is directed. A light beam is directed through the air sample so that portions of the beam will be scattered if any particles are present in the path of the beam. A beam blocking device on the opposite side of the air sample is arranged to block all light except light scattered in a predetermined angular range corresponding to a predetermined allergen particle size range. Light transmitted through the blocking device is detected by a light detector and an alarm output signal is produced if the detected amount of light is above a predetermined level. In another embodiment, an allergen particle detecting apparatus has a passageway through which environmental air is directed. A light beam is directed across the passageway so that portions of the beam will be scattered if any particles are present in the path of the beam. A beam blocking device on the opposite side of the passageway blocks any nonscattered portion of the beam while transmitting any scattered portions of the beam along a light path in the apparatus. Any light scattered by allergen size particles will be traveling in a predetermined angular range, and a pinhole device is positioned in the light path so as to transmit only light traveling in that angular range. Light transmitted through the pinhole device is detected by a light detector and an alarm output signal is produced if the detected amount of light is above a predetermined level.
