    • A scouring pad is disclosed for cleaning and polishing delicate surfaces. The pad includes a three dimensional lofty nonwoven web made out of a plurality of polyester fibers and a cleansing composition which is present in the voids within the web in dry form. The cleansing composition is, preferably, a surfactant blend containing suitable amounts of stearic monoethanolamide, coconut monoethanolamide, dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid, sodium xylene sulfonate, sodium hydroxide, sodium lauryl sulfate, and water or suitable substitutes of the above. The cleansing composition may be a fatty acid based soap also. The cleansing composition is incorporated into the pad by using a cleansing composition in liquid form, adjusting the viscosity of the agent by adding water thereto and by regulating its temperature, injecting under pressure the liquid cleansing composition into a moving extended roll of nonwoven material, drying the resulting product to remove the water from the cleansing composition and the nonwoven material and cutting the nonwoven material to form pads.

    • A process and apparatus for impregnating a molten or viscous cleaning composition into a traveling, three dimensional, lofty, dense nonwoven web is disclosed. The composition is applied by an applicator manifold and is retained in the voids within the web. The velocity of the web and the flow of the cleaning composition are adjusted depending on the viscosity of the composition and the web density. Additionally, the viscosity of the composition can be controlled by altering its temperature or by altering the line pressure. The process eliminates the use of a doctor blade, spray system and application roll to meter the amount of cleaning composition into the web, and is suitable for the application of a molten or very viscous chemical compositions into a lofty, dense nonwoven web.

    • Thermostatic control of an electric iron is achieved through utilizing the expansion and contraction of the iron's sole plate relative to a low expansion reference member. In one embodiment, a flexible reference member extends from a fixed mounting at the tip of the sole plate to a switch unit at the rear of the sole plate. The reference number is connected to, and held in tension by, a snap acting actuator within the switch unit, such that as the sole plate expands, the free end of a blade is pulled by the reference member to cause a contact carrying tongue to snap away from a contact to interrupt the power supply. In addition, the temperature of operation may be controlled by varying the effective length of the reference member such as, for example, by deflecting it laterally by a cam member.

    • A thermally-sensitive electrical control is mounted to the head of an electric immersion heater of an electric kettle or like container. The control has an outer periphery of less radial extent than the head so as to be passable, during assembly, through an opening in the wall of the associated container such that the head may be positioned in the opening with the control mounted thereto by insertion of the control through the opening from inside the container. The control includes an electric switch and a snap-action, overheat sensing bimetallic actuator disposed on the side of a body portion of the control which faces the head when the control is mounted thereto and a snap-action steam responsive bimetallic actuator mounted to the opposite side of the body portion. The switch is operated by the bimetallic actuators through an over-center mechanism disposed on the opposite side of the body portion and connected to the switch by a U-shaped link slidbly mounted in the body portion. Terminal pins, adapted to be engaged by a separate socket connector, are disposed on an opposite side of the control body portion. The body portion includes a shelf member which is disposed between and separates the terminals from the steam responsive bimetallic actuator and over-center mechanism.
