    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for counteracting an effect of density-dependent blurring to sharpen digital images to be printed. SOLUTION: A sharpening filter is disclosed for performing density-dependent sharpening on digital images. In one embodiment, a digital image to be sharpened is decomposed into a plurality of high-pass versions of the image at different resolutions. These high-pass images are gained at each resolution and recombined with the original image to produce a sharpened version of the image. The gains that are applied at each resolution are density-dependent. As a result, the effects of density-dependent blurring are counteracted, such that the sharpness of the final printed image is independent of the print density. Techniques are disclosed for performing such density-dependent sharpening with a high degree of computational efficiency. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the deterioration of image quality in boundaries among respective regions of image data by simple control.
      SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus which generates output image data based on multi-level image data is provided with: a calculation part 300 which calculates maximum density and minimum density in a pixel block 301 comprising the predetermined number of pixels including attentional pixel data out of the multi-level image data; an error diffusion processing part which generates gray-scale pixel data from the attentional pixel data according to an error diffusion method; a dither processing part which generates gray-scale pixel data according to a dither processing method; a distribution ratio determination part which determines a distribution ratio of the error diffusion method and the dither processing method on the basis of the calculated maximum density and the minimum density; a composition part which combines gray-scale pixel data for an attentional pixel which has been generated by the error diffusion processing part and the dither processing unit according to the determined distribution ratio and outputs the result. The distribution ratio determination part increases the distribution ratio of the error diffusion method to the dither processing method as a difference between the maximum density and the minimum density becomes larger.
