摘要： Corrosion of an aluminum article exposed to corrosive halogen-containing species within semiconductor processing apparatus is avoided by fabricating the aluminum article from a high purity aluminum-magnesium alloy having a magnesium content of about 0.1% to 1.5% by weight, either throughout the entire article or at least in the surface region which is to be rendered corrosion-resistant, and a mobile impurity atom content of less than 0.2% by weight. Upon exposure of the article to a halogen-containing species, a protective magnesium halide layer is formed beneath the surface of the article. The protective layer prevents halogens from penetrating to the base aluminum, thereby protecting the article from corrosion and cracking. To protect the magnesium layer from abrasion, the article preferably also includes a hard, cohesive coating over the magnesium halide layer. A preferred cohesive coating is aluminum oxide or aluminum nitride.

摘要： An austenitic stainless steel screw having a nitride hard layer on its surface to prevent corrosion on parts of the screw such as a screw head which is in contact with the environment by removing a portion of the nitride hard layer to expose austenitic stainless steel base. By contrast, in the thread part and the like of the screw, the nitride hard layer is retained to improve the hardness and the tapping functions of the screw. In the method for manufacturing, the austenitic stainless steel screw is exposed to a fluorine-or fluoride-containing gas atmosphere prior to nitriding to form a fluoride film on its surface and then is nitrided in that state. Accordingly, the so formed nitride hard layer becomes uniform and deep to obtain an austenitic stainless steel screw having excellent surface properties.

摘要： A method of surface hardening a substrate made of an inorganic material by diffusing a different inorganic material into the substrate is disclosed wherein the diffusion is effected in an alkali metal gas atmosphere. The substrate may be made of titanium, zirconium, iron, yttrium, tungsten, tantalum or a material containing one of those elements as a principle component. The diffusion material may be boron, silicon or a material containing one of those elements. The alkali metal gas atmosphere is produced by heating metallic sodium, potassium, lithium or a combination thereof. The surface hardened substrate produced according to the method exhibits an increased Young's modulus of elasticity, hardness and mechanical strength and is particularly suitable in the manufacture of electro-acoustic diaphragms as well as other light weight, high mechanical strength articles.
