    • Disclosed is a circuit for controlling the activation of a stereo indicator and a tune indicator in an AM stereo receiver. In the preferred embodiment, a pilot tone detector is employed to determine if the input signal is a stereo signal and an AGC is used to detect a preselected improvement in the amplitude of the received signal. A capacitor is charged in response to the stereo or the amplitude condition. When the charge level of the capacitor reaches a first predetermined level, a tune indicator driver is enable to allow a tune detect circuit to drive the indicator. This prevents the tune indication from activating before the receiver is stabilized. When the charge level of the capacitor reaches a second predetermined level, a stereo indicator driver gradually activates the stereo indicator. This prevents sudden power drains from adversely affecting the circuit.

    • In a radio having an in phase multiplier (A) for providing an in phase detected signal, a detection unit for receiving this signal and for determining whether this signal includes any negative polarity components which would indicate that a viable broadcast signal does not exist on the incoming frequency of interest. This detection unit can include a comparator (11) for comparing the incoming signal against a selected reference value. The invention can also include a signal quality evaluation unit (58) for providing either a digital or analog quality signal that can also effect the output and be used by appropriate processing circuitry to further refine the channel selection process.

    • A frequency generation unit is provided that permits a receiver to tune from channel to channel without cycle skipping and in which compensation for phase offset introduced during tuning is provided. The frequency generation unit includes a fractional-N synthesizer, a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), and a direct digital synthesizer (DDS). The fractional-N synthesizer generates frequencies from the VCO as well as a temperature controlled crystal oscillator. Outputs from the fractional-N synthesizer are supplied both the VCO and the DDS to control the VCO and DDS. The combination of the voltage controlled oscillator and fractional-N synthesizer is perpetually locked. The fractional-N synthesizer is maintained in a locked condition. The VCO output is provided to the DDS. An output from the DDS or from the fractional-N synthesizer forms the output signal of the frequency generation unit.

    • In the field of AM stereo detection, co-channel or adjacent channel interference may cause some distortion and side-to-side movement of a stereo signal source as well as false "stereo detect" signals in AM stereo receivers having phase locked loop (PLL) systems. The invention provides a filter receiving the incoming signal and passing only the frequencies resulting from said interference; a sensor measures the output of the filters and if this signal is above a given level, the monophonic mode is enabled, i.e., the pilot detector, the stereo presence indicator and the stereo mode switch are disenabled for a timed interval. A higher given level of interference is required for stereo disenablement when stereo transmission with pilot tone is already being received.
