    • A safety interlock for a vehicle driven through a transmission by an internal combustion engine that has a magneto ignition system and a seat occupied by a driver. The interlock is electrically connected to the ignition and to safety switches, one that is opened when the transmission to a traction drive is engaged and another that is closed when the seat is occupied. The interlock circuit disables the ignition if the engine is not running and the transmission is engaged so the engine cannot be started under unsafe conditions. The engine is also disabled if, after it is running, the seat becomes unoccupied while the transmission is engaged. However, the interlock allows the engine to be started with the seat occupied or not, as long as the transmission is disengaged. One or more safety switches associated with mechanisms driven by the engine can be connected in series with the transmission-operated safety switch to control operation in the same manner.

    • An inductive, solid-state, magneto ignition system utilizing solid-state switching and operable at low speeds to facilitate starting. Timing is controlled in response to current developed in the primary winding of the magneto coil, which automatically operates a solid-state switch to open the primary winding circuit of the magneto ignition when the current in the primary winding is at a predetermined level. The arrangement couples a high peak voltage and short rise time with a relatively long arc duration across an associated spark plug to increase the over-all performance of a magneto ignition system. In one embodiment, a spark advance is automatically provided as engine speed increases.

    • A tilt or acceleration sensing apparatus and method that allows a tilt or acceleration sensing device of a vehicle to determine: 1) a maximum fall angle of the vehicle, regardless of the orientation of the vehicle and the vehicle's tilt sensor(s) to the incline; or 2) the downward acceleration of the vehicle. In one embodiment, a method of determining a maximum fall angle of a vehicle includes sensing tilt angles of two sensing axes of the vehicle relative to a horizontal reference plane and calculating the maximum fall angle of the vehicle based on the tilt angles. The apparatus and method may also include comparing the maximum fall angle to predetermined values and generating output signals when the maximum fall angle exceeds the predetermined values. In another embodiment, a method of determining when a vehicle is sliding downhill includes sensing the accelerations of three sensing axes.
