摘要： To permit simple manufacture and reliable attachment of the center electrode into a ceramic body, an elastic tubular press mold is located in a press body, the press mold being closed off by a movable plug having a needle-like extension with a gripping end formed thereon to receive the center electrode before the plug is inserted into the tubular mold. Ceramic material is then filled into the mold, the plug closing off one end thereof, the mold is closed with a second plug, and pressure in the order of from 250 to 400 bar applied to the outside of the elastic mold to compress the ceramic material and embed the center electrode tip therein. Upon release of pressure, the compressed ceramic, with the center electrode therein can be removed from the holding tip of the needle-like extension of the plug, for subsequent grinding to size, sintering, firing, and glazing, if desired.

摘要： A plug for use in a cylinder of an internal combustion engine adapted to limit the production of nitrogen oxide (NOx). The plug has an inner cover which surrounds the ignition electrodes with the inner cover having an opening to provide communication between the electrodes and the engine cylinder. An outer cover surrounds the inner cover in spaced relation therewith and has an opening in juxtaposition with the inner cover opening. The outer cover has a number of perforations so that water injected between the inner and outer covers through one or more nozzles is evaporated into steam upon engagement with the red-hot outer cover with the steam passing through the perforations into the cylinder in a direction away from the electrodes so as not to interfere with the functioning of the electrodes.

The conductive glass, the carbonaceous resistor and the auxiliary resistor are placed between the discharge and the terminal electrode portions so as to elongate an effective resistance portion of the resistor.

摘要： Insulators for spark plugs are pressed into an interference fit with steel shells to provide good heat transfer from the insulator tip to the shell. The interference fit is produced by deforming a portion of the shell inward to form an inwardly projecting ridge of the shell metal, and then pressing a portion of the insulator into an interference fit with the ridge. A polymeric sealer is applied to the insulator shoulder adjacent the upper edge of the shell, and the shell edge is rolled over the sealer to extrude a bead of sealer outward between the shell edge and the insulator. In an alternate construction, the insulator is tapered so only its upper portion has an interference fit the with shell.
