    • A load beam of a suspension assembly has one or more longitudinal channels in the rigid region between the side edges. The load beam blank (from which the load beam itself is constructed) has a relief means, such as a channel-compensating gap extending through the actuator mounting region from the proximal end to provide additional width of sheet material to the rigid region of the load beam blank and to enable the formation of these longitudinal channels. A method for manufacturing a load beam of a suspension assembly from a generally planar sheet of resilient spring material is described. A load beam blank is shaped to include an actuator mounting region on the distal end, and a rigid region between the actuator mounting region and the distal end. A relief means, such as a channel-compensating gap extends through the actuator mounting region from the proximal end. At least one channel is constructed in the rigid region. The channel preferably extends between the gap and the distal end of the load beam and thereby reduces the width of the gap in the blank.

    • A suspension assembly for supporting a slider over a disk surface within a rigid disk drive includes a load beam with a flexure at a distal end of the load beam, the flexure of the type having a cantilever portion with a free-end and a limiter for restricting the range of flexure of the free-end of the cantilever portion. The flexure of the present invention has a cantilever portion provided with an integral limiter and stop surface. The limiter is preferably connected with the flexure by a bend. More preferably, a single bend of about 90 degrees is provided for each limiter. In accordance with the method of the present invention, a suspension assembly is made by forming a flexure having a cantilever portion with a free-end and a limiter from the same sheet material, and forming the limiter so that an engagement surface thereof is spaced from a stop surface of the flexure so that movement of the free-end of the cantilever portion in one direction will cause the limiter engagement surface to contact the stop surface of the flexure. Specifically, the step of forming the cantilever portion and the limiter from the same material preferably comprises an etching operation. Moreover, the forming operation preferably comprises a bending operation to form a single bend in the limiter of about 90 degrees.

    • An improved low profile magnetic head disk assembly is used with dynamic magnetic information storage devices or rigid disk drives. The HDA includes a head mounted to a suspension, wherein the suspension base plate is an integral part of the actuator plate. Each actuator plate is in close registration with a bearing. The actuator assembly positions the head in close proximity with the rigid disk surfaces, with the actuator plates positioned exterior to the disks and not passing over the surface of the disks. The actuator plates may be a single piece for each disk, two pieces (one for each suspension), or three pieces (two actuator plates and one spacer). The center line of the actuator plate(s), with or without the spacer, is at the center line of the disk, thus reducing the total HDA height.

    • A magnetic head suspension 10 has a flexure portion 18 constituted as a single one-piece structure with a load beam spring element portion 12. The flexure portion 18 projects beyond a distal apex of the load beam spring element portion 12. The flexure portion 18 includes a first connection arm member connected at a proximal end thereof to the distal apex of the load beam spring element portion 12. Head support means are suspended from the first connection arm member. The head support means are constructed and arranged for supporting a head slider bonded to one face of a bond pad area 26 thereof. The head support means has a pair of substantially parallel flexible longitudinal arms 28 substantially enclosing the bond pad area 26. The distal end of the flexible arms 28 flexibly suspend the bond pad area 26 of the head support means. The proximal ends of the flexible arms 28 are connected to the distal end of the first connection arm member. A stiffening member 20, adhesively secured to the load beam element portion 12 adjacent the distal end thereof, projects over at least a portion of the flexure portion 18 and has a load protrusion 22 projecting from a surface thereof for engaging the opposite face of the bond pad area 26, thereby increasing vertical axis stiffness and providing a gimballing point for facilitating tracking of the slider over the surface of a disk.
