    • A polarizing beam splitter (PBS) 14 includes a first prism 31, a second prism 32, a polarizing split film 29, an antireflection film 33, and an adhesive 34. The first and second prisms 31 and 32 are made of transparent materials and are cemented to each other by the adhesive having a refractive index less than those of the first and second prisms 31 and 32. The polarizing split film 29 is formed on a surface of the first prism 31. The antireflection film 33 is provided on one surface of the second prism 32 to which the first prism 31 is cemented. The antireflection film 33 has a refractive index distribution in which a refractive index decreases from the second prism 32 side to the adhesive 34 side and prevents reflection of light between the second prism 32 and the adhesive 34.

    • The present invention is directed to a machine programmed to edge an ophthalmic lens blank. The machine includes an edger device for forming a bevel in a peripheral edge of the lens blank, a central processing unit operably associated with the edger device for controlling operation thereof, and a computer program stored on a medium in communication with the central processing unit. The computer program includes a first instruction set operably causing the edger device to form a bevel in a peripheral edge of a lens blank. A second instruction set operably causes the edger device to form a step in the peripheral edge intermediate an apex of the bevel and an interface between the peripheral edge and a major surface of the lens blank. A method of controlling an edger device for edging an ophthalmic lens blank and a computer program are also disclosed.

    • A goggle includes a lens assembly which comprises a front lens, a rear lens spaced apart from the front lens, and a liquid crystal device disposed on one of the lenses. The goggle includes a frame, which defines an aperture and a peripheral channel. The peripheral channel receives the front lens and the rear lens is positioned rearward of the channel so that the aperture receives the lens assembly. A power unit includes a battery and a drive circuit, wherein the drive circuit is connected to a pair of prongs that are electrically connectable to the liquid crystal device for operation thereof. The power unit provides a master switch connected to the battery to control application of power to the drive circuit, and a state change switch to control application of power from the drive circuit, through the prongs, to the liquid crystal device.

    • A vision enhancing device for a person having macular degeneration of the retina, comprises a lens and a light diverging surface on the lens that symmetrically diverges away from the eye at an angle relative to an optic axis to redirect incident light away from the optic axis outwardly toward an un-diseased region of the retina. The light diverging surface can be a smooth surface, which can be a continuous curved surface, and can be a diverging conical surface. The lens can be an eyeglass lens, contact lens, intraocular lens, telescopic lens, correction lens, or magnification lens. A light diverging insert having a conical surface and, optionally, an end surface can be used in a lens for redirecting light to the un-diseased region of the retina.

    • Disclosed is a sports training glasses for assisting a person training in a sporting endeavor requiring hand/eye coordination to focus on a specific object, such as a baseball or golf ball. The sports training glasses are comprised of a frame having a centrally disposed bridge. The bridge may be designed to rest directly on a wearer's nose, or to have engaged with it a nosepiece for resting on a wearer's nose. A pair of temple arms are articulated at either end of the frame by a flexible, integral hinge made of a shape memory material. A pair of opaque lenses are disposed along the lower edge of the frame, one opaque lens on either side of the bridge. An elongated slot, aligned horizontally, is disposed within each opaque lens. A sliding member engages with each opaque lens permitting horizontal translation behind the elongated slot. An aperture is disposed within the sliding member, within which may be disposed a transparent lens. A separate nosepiece may engage with the bridge to provide better comfort. The nosepiece is comprised of a soft elastomeric material having two lobes acutely conjoined at their upper ends, each lobe having a series of horizontal splines and a vertical tenon which engages with a vertical slot in the rear surface of the bridge.
