    • In some embodiments, a system for automated loading of a side-by-side stack of thin objects to a feeder is provided. The system can include, e.g.: a) a transporter having a transport surface upon which a side-by-side stack of thin objects can be conveyed; b) a carrier, configured to carry a side-by-side stack of thin objects, over the transport surface; c) a pusher over the transport surface; d) the pusher and the carrier being movable relative to one another between a first position in which the pusher is inside the carrier behind a side-by-side stack of thin objects on the carrier and a second position in which the pusher is laterally displaced from the carrier, such that the side-by-side stack of thin objects on the carrier is laterally slid off of the carrier by the pusher.

    • In an apparatus for receiving generally rectangular individual sheets and for storing the same in a container (14) in orderly condition, which container is arranged in a housing and has a throughput opening (34) connected with an input opening of the housing by a transport belt (18) for serially transporting the individual sheets, the throughput opening in at least the direction of one edge of the sheets is smaller than the corresponding measurement of the sheets. At the end of the transport belt (18, 24) a stacking apparatus (22) is arranged in front of the throughput opening and includes a stack support surface (30) for forming a stack of sheets, the sheets being arranged upright on the stack support surface (30) and parallel to the throughput opening (34). For inserting the sheets in the container (14) a pusher (48) is provided which is shiftable in the direction toward throughput opening. By means of this pusher the sheet stack formed on the stack support surface (30) is pushable into the throughput opening of the container (14) with accompanying bending of the sheet stack.

    • An inductor station for a sortation conveying system is able to accommodate an assortment of substantially rectangular items which in general each have unique dimensions. A worker loads the inductor station with a charge of items each standing upright on edge and side-by-side. The charges are loaded in sequence to a feeder tray, and a programmably controlled feeding assembly feeds the charges along the feeder tray to a loading mechanism. The loading mechanism loads the endmost item from a discharge end of the feeder tray onto a takeaway conveyor. The items are loaded on the takeaway standing upright and on edge. An indexing motion stripping conveyor is used to time the loading of the items onto the takeaway conveyor so that the items are conveyed to an appropriate pocket on the core conveyor for the sortation conveying system. The feeding assembly and the loading assembly are each programmably controlled to coordinate movement of items through the inductor station with each item substantially maintaining its upright orientation.

    • A backing plate support system is provided for a mailpiece feeder mechanism wherein mailpieces are conveyed vertically, on-edge along a transport deck to a transfer station for subsequent sortation and delivery. The backing plate support system includes a guide track disposed along and adjacent to the transport deck and a plurality of backing plates each having a guide support fitting at its base. The guide support fitting engages the guide track and supports the backing plate in an orthogonal position relative to the transport deck. The backing plate support system, furthermore, includes an advancing belt disposed adjacent the guide track and adapted to be driven linearly along the transport deck and a mechanism for coupling each backing plate to the advancing belt. The mechanism facilitates relative movement of the backing support plate relative to the advancing belt in one direction while inhibiting relative motion thereof in an opposing direction. Furthermore, the mechanism facilitates optimum spacing between pairs of backing plates when mailpieces are stacked therebetween by a system operator. In one embodiment of the invention, a controller is operable to preposition each of the backing plates such that the operator may stack mailpieces against one backing plate and, on the command of the operator, introduce a second backing plate to support any thickness of stacked mailpieces.
