摘要： A medium for purifying fluids containing toxic compounds can be made by a method which comprises applying a dispersion of a halogenated heterocyclic N-halamine in an inert liquid carrier to the surface of a substrate having a high surface area and allowing the inert liquid carrier to penetrate into the substrate, wherein the inert liquid carried does not react with halogen atoms in the halogenated heterocyclic N-halamine, wherein the halogenated heterocyclic N-halamine is capable of destroying the toxic compound by oxidative action, and wherein the halogenated heterocyclic N-halamine becomes deposited on the surface of the substrate after the inert liquid carrier penetrates into the substrate.

摘要： Articles can be provided with odor resistance by applying a dispersion of a halogenated heterocyclic N-halamine in an inert liquid carrier onto the surface of the article and allowing the inert liquid carrier to penetrate into it. The N-halamine accordingly becomes deposited on the surface of the article after the inert liquid carrier penetrates into the article. This method can be used to provide odor resistance to a variety of substrates, including garbage bags. It can also be used to deposit other functional particulates onto the surface of substrates having sufficient porosity to take up the vehicle. For instance, such functional particles can be oxidants that display antimicrobial and/or enzyme inhibitory efficacy or particles having toxin interaction potentials through oxidative degradation or adsorption of toxic substances in air and/or water, such as fluoride uptake by metal oxide microparticles.

摘要： This invention provides a process for the N-halogenation of at least one 5-hydrocarbyl hydantoin and/or at least one 5,5-dihydrocarbyl hydantoin. The process comprises concurrently feeding into a reaction zone (i) water, inorganic base, and 5,5-dimethylhydantoin, these being fed separately and/or in any combination(s), (ii) a separate feed of a brominating agent, and (iii) a separate feed of a chlorinating agent, in proportions such that during all or substantially all of the time the concurrent feeding is occurring halogenation of the 5-hydrocarbyl hydantoin and/or 5,5-dihydrocarbyl hydantoin occurs and resultant halogenated product precipitates in the liquid phase of an aqueous reaction mixture, and in which the pH of the liquid phase is continuously or substantially continuously maintained in the range of about 2.0 to about 8.0 during all or substantially all of the time the concurrent feeding is occurring. Also provided by this invention is a composition of matter which is a halogenated 5-hydrocarbyl hydantoin or a halogenated 5,5-dihydrocarbyl hydantoin, which is a mixture of the 1,3-dibromo-, 1,3-dichloro-, and/or N,N′-bromochloro-species of the halogenated hydantoin.

摘要： Heterocyclic amine polyol compounds and methods for making the compounds and polymers for coatings and materials that can be rendered biocidal by exposure to halogen solutions. One embodiment of compounds have the formula: wherein R1 and R2 are at least one of an alkyl group of 1 to 6 carbons or phenyl group; 1 R3 is at least one of a hydrogen and an alkyl group of 1 to 6 carbons; and X is at least one of a hydrogen and a halogen. The compounds are rendered biocidal when X is a halogen. The compounds are useful for making protective films, coatings, sealants, adhesives, sponges, foams, paints and in other applications.
