    • Improved optical vector matrix multipliers are disclosed. The multipliers comprise: a plurality of light sources, each operable to radiate light of intensity ui; fan-out optics arranged to expand the light radiated by the light sources in one dimension; a spatial light modulator comprising a plurality of light modulating zones, each zone receiving light from one of the light sources and being operable to modulate the intensity of said received light by a factor of vij; and fan-in optics arranged to focus the modulated light onto a plurality of light detectors. The fan out optics, spatial light modulator, and fan-in optics are arranged such that an intensity of light proportional to ∑ i   u i  v ij is received at each light detector; and the fan-out optics comprise guided-wave optical components. Specific embodiments are disclosed in which the fanout optics comprise optical splitters, or a partially guiding wedge prism.

    • A programmable optical arithmetic/logic device employs a first and second plurality of positionally encoded optical light paths. For arithmetic operations, these light paths represent residue numbers. The arithmetic/logic device includes first and second reordering units which are responsive to a third and fourth plurality of light sources serving to select one of a plurality of arithmetic or logic operations to be performed by the arithmetic/logic device. The arithmetic/logic device further employs an optical arithmetic/logic unit which is identically constructed for all of the selectable arithmetic/logic operations and which implements an optical table look-up function to obtain the desired output. Finally, the arithmetic/logic device used an output reordering device to reorder the output of the arithmetic/logic unit depending upon the originally selected arithmetic/logic operation. For arithmetic operations, the final output is provided as an output residue number representation.

    • A common substrate supports a plurality of waveguides numbering one more n the number of bits in the binary addends to be summed. Linearly polarized light is transmitted along each of the waveguides and a plurality of electrodes connectable to an electrical potential representative of a binary bit. The electrodes have discrete lengths contiguous to the waveguides for causing .pi.-radian phase retardation of light propagation upon application of the electrical potential. A polarization separator receives the output of each waveguide and produces signals commensurate with orthogonally polarized components. Photo detectors responsive to the signals representing each of the components produce commensurate electrical output signals which are, in turn, amplified and compared in an analog comparator for producing a binary output signal representative of the relative amplitudes of each pair of signals representing the orthogonally polarized components in each of the waveguides.
