摘要： Methods and apparatus for selectively caching (and de-caching) video content in network so as to reduce content transformation requirements and also cache storage requirements. In one embodiment, a content caching controller associated with a content server differentiates content requests based on content attributes such as the requested codec format (e.g., MPEG or Windows Media), resolution, bitrate, and/or encryption type or security environment. If the content requested by a user is not available with the requested attribute(s), the content server transfers to content to the user by first transforming it. The content server also speculatively caches the transformed content locally, so that a future request for the same content with the same attributes can be filled by transferring without the intermediate transformation step. The controller allows the network operator to optimize use of available storage and transcoding resources.

摘要： A method and system for auxiliary data detection. Data is received on a hand-held device from a display of a signal on a monitor. The signal is visually displayed on the monitor at a frequency. A modulated video signal is received on the hand-held device from a display device. The modulated video signal contains auxiliary data modulated within a video signal in a substantially invisible way. The modulated video signal is demodulated to obtain the auxiliary data. At least one of the data or the auxiliary data is processed to identify a promotional opportunity available through the hand-held device. The user of the hand-held device is notified of availability of the promotional opportunity through the hand-held device.

摘要： A transmitting party adds reproduction time information to each transport packet to form an extended transport packet, encapsulates the extended transport packet, adds capsule counter information, and transmits the capsule. A receiving party has a storage means, and transmits a re-send request including the capsule count information to the transmitting party when a packet loss occurs. At the receiving party, the re-sent data received overwrites data in its original storage region. At reproduction, the receiving party decodes the data after compensating for jitter referring to reproduction time information. Accordingly, a packet loss or jitter is compensated for at both transmitting and receiving parties in a communications network such as the Internet so as to prevent the occurrence of a decoding error at the receiving party.

These operations also include selecting an even based on actor, actress, director, etc., alerting a user to an attempt to record a duplicate program, displaying a status of a program from the available content the user is watching, playing paused programming or converting paused programming to recorded programming during a channel change, allowing a user to record an entire program after viewing the program for a period of time, permitting a user to capture a snippet of the available content, permitting a user to rewind recording in an increment for playback of a portion of the available content, enabling a user to jump back from a live broadcast to a last paused video segment.

摘要： Conventionally, when the version of a program has been upgraded, the whole of a currently stored program needs to be deleted to be replaced by a new program, and authentication needs to be performed again on such new program when it is activated. However, since the whole of the program is required to be stored and authenticated even when only a part of such program has changed, it consumes time and leads to the decrease in responsiveness. In order to solve this problem, the present invention extracts a difference between a new program and a currently stored old program, when such new program is to be stored, and the new program is to be stored after authentication is performed only on such difference.
