1 Instrument flight rules (IFR) training device US859883 1992-03-30 US5252069A 1993-10-12 Richard A. Lamb; Jack J. Gilbert
An Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) Training Device for use during aircraft pilot training in conjunction with a headset having a pair of earphones supported by earphone stirrups. In its most preferred embodiment, the training device includes, at least, a mask member for partially occluding a pilot's vision, two arm members extending rearwardly from connections with opposing sides of the mask member, and headset connecting clamps for pivotally connecting the arm members to the headset stirrups, wherein the training device is supported by the headset and movable to a location up and away from a pilot's primary field of vision.
2 Universal aircraft panel with a dynamically symmetrical series of displays for the directional and rate flight instruments US09428452 1999-10-28 US06255964B1 2001-07-03 Gordon H. Steele, Jr.
An integrated and dynamic symmetrical display of flight instruments for universal use in aircraft, wherein key instruments indicating with respect to aircraft direction are specifically arrayed with respect to key instruments indicating aircraft rate, wherein flight under instrument flight rules may be more easily learned, undertaken, and practiced with greater safety and ease of pilot workload, as compared with asymmetrical and random conventional flight instrument displays. Specifically, directional instruments are positioned in an aligned row above similarly arranged aircraft rate instruments for quick, reliable pilot scan and information utilization.
3 System and method for extending the life of aircraft anti-collision lights US765955 1991-09-26 US5206644A 1993-04-27 Robert M. Dempsey
A system and method for extending the useful life of anti-collision lights comprising inert gas flash tubes and which are included on commercial, military, and business jet aircraft. When the aircraft is cruising in high altitude tightly controlled airspace (where instrument flight rules are controlling, i.e., at altitudes above 18,000 feet), and when the aircraft is not undergoing a substantial change in altitude, the power input to the anti-collision lights is reduced. The reduction in the power provides a significant increase in the useful life of the flash tube while causing only slight reduction in the intensity of the light output of the flash tube.
4 FLIGHT WATCH WITH MULTIPLE TIMERS AND ALARMS PCT/US0020307 2000-07-27 WO0209490A8 2002-02-28 REISMAN JOHN
A timepiece to be worn by pilots of aircraft which provides a means to alert the pilot of multiple sequenced event occurrences, in a failsafe manner, via multiple alarm means including visual (29-32), auditory (36), and tactile (37) ability. The six in-flight timers (61-65), accessible through buttons (1-4), allow the pilot comprehensive user programmable features in order to meet the needs of a given flight. The watch also provides instant access to Zulu time and all forty two zones around the world. The watch is designed to assist the pilot in his awareness of engine time, countdown run time, fuel tank switching time, final approach fix to missed approach point time, countdown to instrument flight rule minimums, time to fix, timed turns, holding patterm timing, and time to close flight plan.
5 Pilot pad US09829627 2001-04-10 US20020145019A1 2002-10-10 Christopher Ulibarri
A pad for allowing a user to write comfortably and legibly on a leg. The pad includes a plurality of sheets adapted to be written upon, each sheet having a plurality of spaced diagonal writing guide lines extending across a width thereof. A base section is provided with a clip connected thereto for selectively retaining the sheets on the base. A latching mechanism releasably secures the base section to a leg of a user allowing notes to be written between the lines on a top sheet while seated with an arm in a comfortable writing position. The plurality of lines on each sheet extend upward from a left side to a right side to accommodate a right hand person or extend downward from a left side of to a right side to accommodate a left handed person. The lines are preferably inclined at an angle of between substantially twenty five to substantially thirty five degrees. A heading is printed near a top edge of each sheet, the heading being a visual flight rules/instrument flight rules form. The base section further includes a base and a knee board connected to the base in an angularly adjustable manner, the clip selectively securing the sheets to the knee board.
6 Flight watch with multiple timers and alarm indicating means US184928 1998-11-02 US06144619A 2000-11-07 John P. Reisman
An improved timepiece to be worn by pilots of aircraft which provides a means to alert the pilot of multiple sequenced event occurrences, in a failsafe manner, via multiple alarm means including visual (29-32), auditory (36), and tactile (37) ability. The six in-flight timers, accessible through buttons (1-4), allow the pilot comprehensive user progranmable features in order to meet the needs of a given flight. This watch solves previously unrecognized problems with regard to in-flight timing needs in general aviation. This watch is an electronic watch, specifically designed for pilots to address the plurality of in-flight timing needs, and includes a failsafe method by which to alert the wearer of time reliant in-flight, and post-flight, event occurrences. This watch also provides instant access to Zulu time and all forty-two time zones around the world. This watch is designed to assist the pilot in his awareness of engine run time, fuel tank switching time, final approach fix to missed approach point time, countdown to instrument flight rule and visual flight rule minimums, time to fix, timed turns, holding pattern timing, and time to close flight plan.
7 Chart instrument for displaying real time vehicle position relative to information on charts US421972 1989-10-16 US5089816A 1992-02-18 Lawrence Holmes, Jr.
A lap top navigation instrument, suitable for aircraft, includes a chart compartment covered by a transparent window containing a liquid crystal display as part of the window through which a conventional map or chart in the compartment can be viewed and a computer whereby an image can be generated in the display above the chart in the compartment and, through inputs to the computer from the aircraft's instruments, the computer generated image in the display will be continuously repositioned above the surface of the chart so as pilot using the device has a continuous visual indication of the position of his aircraft over the topography depicted on the chart in the compartment. Directional components may be added to the image giving the pilot additional information in reference to the heading of the aircraft relative to the chart's display of "North" showing how the image is actually tracking over the chart in the compartment. Further, in this device, the chart in the compartment is always visible to the pilot though the window. Should the instrument fail a pilot continues to have access to all the flight information contained on the chart without interruption. As a result, the instrument is very useful for instrument flight rules [IFR] procedures and instrument approaches for landings in that it is failsafe.
