A cash drawer assembly (20) including manually operated release mechanism which includes a spring actuated latch mechanism (42, 60) for latching a cash drawer (30) within an enclosure upon movement of the cash drawer (30) to a closed position. A rod member (86) rotatably mounted adjacent the latch mechanism (42, 60) extends to a position adjacent the front edge of the enclosure. A drive member (94) located adjacent the front edge of the enclosure has a cam surface (92) positioned adjacent one end (90) of the rod member (86). When the cash drawer (30) is in the closed position, a locking mechanism (32) on the cash drawer (30), when activated by a first key (108), moves the drive member (94) to an actuated position which engages and rocks the rod member (86) to a position releasing the latching mechanism (42, 60) from engagement with the cash drawer (30). A depending tab portion (112) of the cash drawer (30) engages and slides the drive member (94) to a home position upon opening of the drawer (30). The locking mechanism (32) disables the cash drawer (30) from being operated by a solenoid (66) mounted within the enclosure structure when moved to a locking position by means of a second key (108).

A point-of-sale system includes a stand that supports a tablet computer. The tablet computer can be connected through a hub to other peripheral components, such as a cash drawer. The cash drawer can include a slidable drawer including a front face, a back face, a first side face, a second side face, and a bottom face and having sliding rails that are hidden from a top view of the drawer. An inner shell is attached to the drawer and two sliding rails, the two sliding rails positioned under the inner shell. Further, a latch is movable between a first position in which the latch holds the drawer in a closed position and a second position in which the latch releases the drawer to an open position. An actuator is used to move the latch between the first and second positions.

A cash drawer movably mounted in a housing between open and closed positions and yieldingly urged toward its open position by resilient rods adjustably mounted in the housing. A latch hook releasably holds the drawer in its closed position, and a power operated device is used alternatively with a manually operated mechanism to move the latch hook in a direction to release the drawer for opening movements. The manually operated mechanism includes a latch hook engaging portion for positively locking the latch hook against drawer releasing movement, when desired. Drawer supporting slide rails are tilted to a degree which provides for substantially constant velocity of opening movement of the drawer, and a yielding friction element engages the drawer to stop opening movement of the drawer at a given position of said opening movement.
