1,242,182. Printing apparatus. ADDRESSO-GRAPH MULTIGRAPH CORP. 21 March, 1969 [22 March, 1968], No. 15120/69. Heading B6C. Carriers 12 bearing forms to be printed on and embossed printing plates pass on conveyer rollers 20, 21 under one or more stationary impression cylinders 44, so that ink from an ink ribbon is transferred to the forms. If a form to be printed on is larger than can be accommodated within the printing machine the excess projects through the gap above rail 17. The carriers 12 may bear both fixed and exchangeable printing plates, and may incorporate means 55, 57 for selectively setting variable data. Grooves 65 on the carriers 12 co-operate with guide rollers 36 to align the carriers 12 with the impression cylinders 44 as the carriers 12 are propelled through the printing machine either manually or by powered rotation of the rollers 20, 21. Preferably an ink ribbon and a paper tape pass together under the impression cylinders 44, with the paper tape uppermost, so that a copy of the matter printed on the form appears in mirror image on the tape and either is stored within the printing machine or ejected as a separate record.

16 Improvements in Flat Bed Rotary Printing Presses. GB191124784D 1911-11-07 GB191124784A 1912-11-07 LAKE HAROLD WILLIAMSON
24,784. Lake, H. W., [American Paper Goods Co.]. Nov. 7. Rotary machines; inking-apparatus; tripping- arrangements; blankets. - Relates to rotary printing-machines of the kind wherein one cr more flat type formes are carried on flat beds on a rotary printing-cylinder, and arranged to co-operate with cylindrical impression surfaces on an impression cylinder, and comprises means for separating the cylinders should a sheet fail to be fed, means for adjusting the impression cylinders radially and circumferentially relatively to their axis of rotation, and means for automatically feeding and delivering the sheets. The formes 11, 12 are secured on flat beds 9, 10 on the cylinder 6, which is driven by gearing from the main shaft 2. The cylindrical impression surfaces 17, 18 are carried on frames 19 on an eccentrically-mounted shaft 20, driven by mutilated gear from the cylinder 6. The cylinder 6 carries at one end a mutilated gear 15 which engages a wheel 41 on the impression cylinder, and two racks 16 adapted to mesh with gear segments 44, 45 adjacent to the impression surfaces 17, 18. The segments 17, 18 are formed with hubs 35 which project into recesses in bearings 37, located in radial slots in the end frames 19. The segments can be adjusted radially by bolts 39 and secured by bolts 39<Î>. The bearings 37 are formed with rims 37<Î> which project above the segments a distance equal to the thickness of a blanket and coacts with a bearer on the typebed. The segments 17, 18 can be adjusted angularly and secured by bolts 38. The impression segments are covered with one or more sheets of paper attached at one end to rods 22, and at the other held by a clamp 23 operated by a screw 24. The grippers 26 are mounted on a shaft 27, and are normally closed by springs 30. Loosely mounted on the shafts 27 are gauges 31, which are connected by pin and slot 31<Î>, 32 to the grippers 26, and normally pressed inward by leaf springs 32<Î>. The gripper-operating cam 33 is provided with a dwell 34, which permits the stops 31 to contact with the cylinder to position the sheet, before the grippers finally close upon it. Inset into the impression surfaces near the gripper edges are electrical contacts 87, which are normally covered by the sheet, but, in the event of the failure of the sheet feed, are engaged by pivoted contacts 92, depressed by a finger 98, 95 on a shaft 100, rocked by a stationary cam. The leads 88, 89 from the contacts are connected to circular strips 84, 85 mounted on the end frames 19 of the impression cylinder, which strips are adapted to rub on contacts 82, 83 on the main frame, connected to a battery 81. The completion of the circuit energizes an electro-magnet 72 on a lever 73, which oscillates continuously under the influence of a cam 77. When the magnet is energized, it attracts an armature 71 on a lever 69, which then moves a slide 64 to the left against the action of a spring 54. This allows the rod 47, which is normally held out of contact with the cam 51 by a projection 63, to fall under the action of a spring 56 and rotate the eccentric bearings 46 of the impression-cylinder shaft 20. The bearings are then reset by the engagement of the cam 51 with the roller 57. The formes are inked by rollers 136, 137, which co-operate with a distributing-drum 138 and with distributing-surfaces 13, 14 on the cylinder 6. Ink is supplied by rollers 134, 135 from a distributing- drum 133 reciprocated longitudinally. When it is desired to print from one forme only, the cam controlling the ductor-roll 132 and the distributing-drums is driven at half speed by change-speed gear. Sheets are fed to the impression-cylinder from an inclined pile 105 by a suction separator 107, carried in a slide and connected to an air-pump. A cock 110 is inserted in the suction pipe and is connected by a link 112 to a lever 113, which is adapted to be rocked once on each revolution of the shaft 20, by a pin 115. The suction and the sheet feed is thus interrupted when sheets are only required on one of the impression-segments. When sheets are to be fed to both segments, the link 112 is removed. The sheets, after being printed, are delivered by a series of tapes 118, passing around rollers 120, 121 and pulleys 122 on the shaft 53. A second series of tapes 119 passes around rollers in a frame arranged to oscillate on the shaft of the roller 123, so that the printed sheets may be delivered alternately into receivers 128, 129. The tapes 119 are driven by a belt 119x.
