    • Improved card reader systems and methods are provided which are capable of processing miniature cards as well as larger cards. In one embodiment, the card reader system includes a means for sensing the presence of a scoring of a card at a specified card location. The system includes a read head adapted to read a magnetic stripe disposed on the card, and a circuit coupled to both the sensing means and the read head. The circuit is adapted to receive input from the sensing means, to determine whether the card is a first size or a second size based on the received input, and to enable the read head to read the entire magstripe when the card is the first size and to read a portion of the magstripe when the card is the second size. In this manner, by providing an improved sensing device with card reader systems, the operation of the read head may be controlled so that it is not fooled into believing more cards exist than are truly passing by the read heads. The first card size may be a CR80 card, and the second card size may be a scored CR80 card containing a mini card.

    • A debit-type merchant transaction is conducted and the merchant transactions are automatically routed to customer accounts for payment of the merchant transactions. A user presents a form of account identification to an electronic transaction device to initiate a transaction. The account identification includes a customer account number. Each customer account is associated with a respective cared issuer. At least some of the card issuers have for selected customers a debit account and a stored value account associated with the same customer account number. To perform a transaction, a customer inputs a transaction amount. A table is provided that includes a plurality of merchant categories and transaction threshold amounts for each merchant category. The merchant category is obtained for each initiated transaction. The inputted transaction amount is compared to the transaction threshold associated with the merchant. The user is required to enter the secret code for the selected transaction if the inputted transaction amount exceeds the transaction threshold amount associated with the merchant. A routing engine is provided that has individually specified routing rules for each of a plurality of different card issuers. The rules define when a transaction should be routed to the debit account and when a transaction should be routed to the stored value account. The routing rules are applied to the transaction and the transaction is routed to either the debit account or the stored value account.

    • Systems and methods are provided for processing transactions, and more specifically for receiving, processing and transmitting electronic payment transaction information. The system and method accesses a transaction software engine (111) that effectuates the authorization of electronic payment requests and the settlement of authorized electronic payments. The transaction software engine (111), in accordance with an embodiment of the invention, resides at a merchant's site (100) and more specifically within the merchant's server (110) or computer which is in communication with one or more network terminals. With such a system, authorization requests may be sent by a terminal as each transaction occurs. Batches of settlement requests are processed after a predetermined time, although the transactions are processed on a transaction-by-transaction basis. In addition, the software engine enables the transmission of data over the Internet (120). As a result, the amount of time to process payment authorization and settlement is reduced as compared with the exclusive use of traditional telephone lines. Moreover, the transaction software engine is capable of accepting data of varying formats and reencoding such data so that it can be processed by the transaction software engine (111). As a result, the transaction software engine (111) can process data that is received from and sent to a variety of terminals as well as data that is sent to and received from a variety of data transaction providers host (142).

    • The present teachings describe a system for processing financial transactions (100). In one embodiment, the system includes a remote terminal (104) adapted to identify the location of financial transactions via global positioning system (GPS) information such that the remote terminal (104) acquires transaction information from a user and transmits a first signal indicative of transaction information and GPS information. In addition, the system (100) includes an authorizing host adapted (108) to receive the first signal transmitted by the remote terminal (104) such that the authorizing host (108) evaluates the risk associated with financial transactions based, at least in part, on the GPS information so as to determine whether to accept or decline the financial transaction. The present teachings further describe devices and methods of acquiring GPS information for the purpose of managing risk for financial transactions.
