    • A device for transporting fragile articles, for example fruit and the like, along a longitudinal path of travel is disclosed. The device includes a spaced and parallel series of rotatable rollers extending along the path of travel for carrying the articles thereon, the rollers forming a series of intermediate article receiving spaces therebetween. A drive assembly is provided for rotating the rollers in the direction of the path of travel, and a carrier assembly is positioned with respect to and spaced from the rollers. A carrier assembly includes a spaced series of carrier members constructed and arranged to engage a peripheral surface portion of the rollers, the carrier assembly being constructed and arranged to move the carrier members in the direction of the path of travel as they engage the peripheral surface portions of the rollers for urging the articles along the path of travel.

    • A support and conveying roller and system utilizing the same for supporting and conveying a workpiece such that the workpiece is maintained in a substantially horizontal plane even though the workpiece includes members projecting therefrom toward the support roller. The support and conveying roller includes an axle with a mandrel mounted thereon such that the mandrel is capable of rotational movement about the axle and lateral movement along the axle. There is a brush helicaly wound about the mandrel and attached only at the ends thereof such that individual coils of the brush are capable of movement relative to adjacent coils of that same brush. The brush has a fiber density sufficient to generally support the workpiece in the substantially horizontal working plane while simultaneously allowing the portions of the workpiece extending angularly from the bottom surface of the workpiece to infiltrate between the fibers. The support and conveying rollers are mounted on a frame at substantially the same elevation. A hydraulic lift system may be incorporated into the frame to allow the support and conveyor rollers to be simultaneously raised or lowered.

    • An impact roller structure (10) for absorbing impact imparted on a conveying surface. The impact roller structure (10) includes a hub portion (11) having an opening (12) therein. The impact roller structure (10) further includes an outer ring-like portion (15) for making contact with the conveying surface.     • One or more of the rollers of a gravity rollerway conveyor has an annular outer tire forming the load support surface, which tire is assembled on the hub of the roller by first being turned inside out from its normal relaxed position and then being stretched over the hub that has a larger outer diameter than the tire inner diameter, so that the tire is pretensioned at its outer surface and precompressed at its inner surface to result in a significant decrease in the rolling resistance at substantially zero speed over a wide range of load values. The assembled tire has a central inner flange clamped in complementary recesses in the hub halves to prevent tire rotation.
