    • A multistage transmission comprises drive gear groups (m) and driven gear groups (n) supported on a hollow driven gear shaft (12) disengageably for each group. The drive gear groups (m) are constantly meshed with the driven gear groups (n), respectively. The friction loss between a cam member inserted into the hollow of the driven gear shaft (12) for engagement and disengagement of the driven gear groups (n) and the driven gear shaft (12) is reduced in the multistage transmission. The multistage mechanism further comprises swing members (24, 25) used for engaging and disengaging each of the driven gear groups (n) with and from the hollow driven gear shaft (12) and cam rods (21, 22) installed to be brought into slidable contact with the inner peripheral surface of the hollow of the driven gear shaft (12) for operating the swing members (24, 25). A gear shift drive means (50) comprises a shift drum (65), a control rod (51) brought into slidable contact with the inner sides of the cam rods (21, 22) and axially moving the cam rods (21, 22), and a control rod operating element (70) for moving the control rod (51) by rotating the shift drum (65). The relative rotation of the control rod (51) and the gear shaft (12) is prohibited by rotation preventing mechanisms (12ss, 51s, 55, 51v).

    • A controllable double overrunning clutch assembly includes concentric inner and outer members (182,184) and a plurality of opposed pairs of clutch pawls (150L,150R) operably disposed between the members (182,184).
