摘要： An optical waveguide device (10) comprises a planar substrate with a lower cladding layer (14), a core layer (16) and an upper cladding layer (18), a groove (20) in the substrate that extends at least into the core layer (16), and a waveguiding channel (22) in the core layer (16), wherein at least a part of the waveguiding channel (22), which may contain a Bragg grating, is sufficiently proximate to the groove (20) in the plane of the substrate for an evanescent field of light propagating in the waveguiding channel (22) to extend laterally into the groove (20). Material contained in the groove modifies the properties of the waveguiding channel, so that a sample of material can be analysed or an active material can be used to modulate the propagating light. The groove (20) can be made before the waveguide (22). The groove (20) can be made by cutting into the substrate with a saw and the waveguide (22) can be made by direct writing in the core layer (16) with an ultraviolet beam.

摘要： A glass fibre (22) has a core (24) provided with Raman laser effect particles (28) embedded in a glass matrix (30), with glass cladding (26) around the core. The refractive index of the glass matrix (30) is matched to that of the Raman laser effect particles (28) so as to avoid scattering. It is not necessary to have a single crystal of Raman laser material to create a laser effect in the glass fibre. A length of fibre in the order of metres or tens of metres can produce optical laser light. It is possible to have a single fibre (22) emit laser light at different frequencies due to Stokes and Anti-Stokes emissions. A simple laser device can therefore produce several colours of laser beams.

摘要： The present invention aims at providing an optical amplification apparatus for improving noise characteristics by controlling an amplification operation by assuming a noise figure of the overall apparatus and by taking influences of noise light due to Raman amplification into consideration, and a controlling method of the optical amplification apparatus. The optical amplification apparatus according to the present invention comprises first optical amplifying means for Raman amplifying signal light by supplying excitation light to a Raman amplification medium, second amplifying means for amplifying signal light output from the first optical amplifying means, target value setting means for setting a target value that minimizes the noise figure of the overall apparatus as to input light power of the second optical amplifying means, and excitation light controlling means for controlling an excitation light supply condition of the first optical amplifying means in accordance with the target value set by the target value setting means. Consequently, the noise characteristics of the overall apparatus can be optimized by the control inside the own apparatus and excellent noise characteristics can be accomplished.

摘要： Laser apparatus is disclosed which includes a laser source and nonlinear means comprised of a nonlinear material which is capable of undergoing stimulated backscattering for reflecting backscattered light. Stimulated backscattering processes such as Brillouin. Raman and Rayleigh may be employed. The nonlinear means includes means for increasing the energy density of the leading portion of an applied laser pulse above the threshold necessary to initiate spontaneous stimulated backscattering in the nonlinear means. Means such as a tapered waveguide or a lens and waveguide combination may be employed to concentrate the applied laser pulse and initiate the backscattering. The backscattered light interacts with the remainder of the applied pulse within the nonlinear means in a manner which both amplifies and narrows the pulsewidth of the backscattered light. A quarter-wave plate and polarizer may be employed to extract the desired output pulse having the narrowed pulsewidth. A method of producing a laser pulse having a narrow pulsewidth is also disclosed.
