    • A system and method for controlling a brushless DC motor (58) is provided. The motor (58) includes a rotor (72) and a stator (96) having at least three phases. The rotor (72) is magnetically coupled to and moveable by the stator (96) when the coils (94) are appropriately energized. Each of the coils (94) is characterized by a corresponding voltage waveform. No more than two position sensors (122) are provided for sensing the position of the rotor (72) during a start-up mode. Each position sensor (122) has an associated position sensor signal. The position sensors (122) are aligned to sense the rotor position such that each position sensor signal indicates a zero torque point corresponding to a phase voltage waveform. The position of the rotor (72) is sensed such that the position sensor signals indicate the start-up operating state of the motor (58). During a first ambiguous start-up state, two predetermined coils (94) are alternately energized. During a defined start-up operating state, one predetermined coil (94) is energized.

    • A spin motor control system includes a BEMF commutation circuit, a startup circuit and a monitor circuit, each of which operate utilizing digital techniques. The BEMF commutation circuit includes first and second counters (301-304) that are programmable to accomodate for changing system parameters. The BEMF commutation circuit does not require the incorporation of an external capacitor, is insensitive to leakage current, and provides stable timing characteristics. The startup circuit also includes a counter (328, 329) and is programmable to accommodate for changing system parameters. The startup circuit does not require an external capacitor and provides stable generation of the startup pulses. The monitor circuit includes first and second counters (355-359) for blanking the BEMF circuitry after commutation. The monitor circuit further includes circuitry (364, 368, 369, 371) for detecting and correcting the direction of rotation of the spin motor. The monitor circuit provides a microprocessor interface (120) to allow for changing motor parameters and environmental conditions, eliminates the requirement of a capacitor, and provides stable timing characteristics.

    • PURPOSE: A system, method, and program product for controlling communication of disk drive motor are provided to consistently and reliably accelerate a motor from a stopped position to the speed at which self-commutation is able to be used. CONSTITUTION: A disk drive includes a motor(102), a spindle(104) driven by the motor, one or more rotatable storage media coupled to the spindle, a motor driver circuit coupled to the motor, and a disk drive controller coupled to the motor driver and other disk drive components. The various components of the disk drive are controlled during operation by signals generated by the disk drive system controller. The disk drive controller provides commutation timing signals to the motor driver that, in turn, drives the motor. During the first part of motor start-up, the disk drive controller selects external commutation of the motor. Commutation values approximating the first portion of the ideal commutation curve are pre-defined and stored as a look-up table into a memory system. Commutation values approximating the second portion are derived from a linear equation having a slope based on an acceleration characteristic of the motor. If the motor fails to reach the critical BEMF speed, the slope is repeatedly decreased, as necessary, and commutation values are re-calculated for this second portion of the commutation curve until the motor is started. Commutation values generated during both portions of the initial start sequence are used to externally control commutation of the motor. After the motor reaches the critical BEMF speed at which the back-electromotive force is high enough for self-commutation to work properly, internal commutation or self-commutation of the motor is used to commutate the motor.
