    • Aircraft environmental control systems having a single ram air inlet (201) providing air to both cabin compressors (204a, 204b) and associated heat exchangers are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, and environmental control system for use with an aircraft includes a ram air inlet, an air conditioning pack (206), and an associated heat exchanger (208). In this embodiment, the ram air inlet provides a fist portion of air (212a, 212b) to the air conditioning pack, and a second portion of air to the associated heat exchanger. The first portion of air flows (214a, 214b) from the air conditioning pack and through the heat exchanger before flowing into an aircraft cabin. The second portion of air from the ram air inlet cools the first portion of air in the heat exchanger before exiting the aircraft through a ram air outlet (205). The inlet and outlet can be modulated on an optimized schedule to minimize the net drag of the ram system. A system with two ram air inlets is also disclosed.

    • The present invention provides a multi-mode secondary power unit (14) comprising a first starter/generator unit (10) operably coupled to a shaft (20). The first starter/generator motor (10) is operable in a motor mode for causing rotational movement of the shaft (20) and is operable in a generator mode for generating electric power from rotational movement of the shaft (20). A thermal engine (22) is operably coupled to the shaft (20) and is operable in a fuel burning mode for causing rotational movement of said shaft (20) and is operable in a non fuel burning mode for receiving rotational movement from the shaft (20). A load compressor (25) is operably coupled to the shaft (20) for pressurizing air to a predetermined level.
