    • The invention involves a procedure having three key stages: In the first stage, just prior to the introduction of the metal into stand (n+1), the value of the rolling torque in stand (n) is determined and recorded. Then, in the second stage, when the metal is introduced into stand (n+1), the value of the rolling torque in stand (n) is held constant by controlling the speed regulator of stand (n) up to the time the metal is introduced into stand (n+2). Finally, in the third stage, which continues until the rolling operation in stand (n) has been completed, the voluminal flow of the metal is held constant at the line of each stand by applying a multiplier coefficient to the signal representing the ratio between the speeds of two successive stands.

    • The rolling force, rolling torque, incoming workpiece thickness and roll gap at a first rolling stand are detected when a workpiece is fed into the nip between the rolls of the first rolling stand to provide their reference values P.sub.10, G.sub.10, H.sub.10 and S.sub.10 which are stored in a memory, and the reference torque arm l.sub.10 is computed on the basis of the reference values G.sub.10 and P.sub.10 of rolling torque and rolling force. The rolling force, rolling torque, incoming workpiece thickness and roll gap at a second rolling stand are detected when the workpiece is fed into the nip between the rolls of the second rolling stand to provide their reference values P.sub.20, G.sub.20, H.sub.20 and S.sub.20 which are stored in a memory, and the reference torque arm l.sub.20 for the second rolling stand is computed on the basis of the reference values G.sub.20 and P.sub.20 of rolling torque and rolling force. The torque arms l.sub.1 and l.sub.2 for the first and second rolling stands are then computed on the basis of the reference torque arms l.sub.10, l.sub.20 ; detected rolling forces P.sub.1, P.sub.2 ; detected roll gaps S.sub.1, S.sub.2 ; detected incoming workpiece thicknesses H.sub.1, H.sub.2 ; and variations .DELTA.P.sub.1, .DELTA.P.sub.2, .DELTA.S.sub.1, .DELTA.S.sub.2, .DELTA.H.sub.1 and .DELTA.H.sub.2 of the reference values. The interstand tension is computed on the basis of the computed torque arms l.sub.1, l.sub.2, and detected rolling torques G.sub.1, G.sub.2 and rolling forces P.sub.1, P.sub.2, and the roll drive main motor is regulated to compensate the deviation of the computed interstand tension from the desired value to maintain the interstand tension constant throughout the rolling operation.

    • Mechanism for determining and varying the tension present in a rod being rolled as it passes between adjacent stands in a rod mill. The read-out gives an indication enabling the operator to make manual speed adjustment of the rolls to change the rod tension to the desired norm, or through a feed-back device the roll speeds may be changed automatically to achieve the same result. The mechanism operates on the principle of temporarily applying a transverse force moved through a fixed distance against the moving rod. The resistance to this force measured by a load cell and associated meters will give an indication of the then existing rod tension as it moves between adjacent roll stands and an indication of the adjustment to be made in roll speeds to change the rod tension to the desired norm.
