A machine gun 1 is provided with a hinged cover 5 which masks the cartridge feed mechanism 2, the cover being provided with means for holding the cover in any one of a plurality of positions or any position within its range of movement. The means may comprise a series of interleaved discs urged together by a plurality of cup springs, alternate discs being connected to the cover and the body of the weapon to frictionally hold the cover in an open position (Figs. 2, 3, not shown). Alternatively, a series of teeth may be provided on a member connected to the body of the weapon, which teeth co-operate with corresponding grooves in a member connected to the cover to hold the cover in a plurality of predetermined open positions, the two members being urged together by a series of cup springs (Figs. 4 to 8, not shown).

    • 743,211. Automatic firearms. FABRIQUE' NATIONALE .D'ARMES DE GUERRE. April 7, 1953 [April 7, 1952], No. 9353/53. Class 119 Relates to automatic firearms of the kind comprising a fixed barrel 1, a breech casing 2 secured to the barrel, a reciprocating slide 3 for driving, locking and unlocking a breech bolt 5, and an underguard 6 containing the trigger mechanism and a returning device in the form of a helical spring 4 in a butt 7 rigid with the underguard, the latter being located beneath the breech casing with respect to which it can be lowered by a pivotal movement. According to the invention the lowering of the underguard, upon release of a locking member 12, permits the removal of the slide, the bolt, and the cover 8 of the breech casing, and the hinge joint between the breech casing and underguard comprises a central hinge plate 15, Fig. 5, on the breech casing and two side plates 17 on the underguard. Further, a lever 11 actuated by the slide and co-operating with the trigger mechanism is mounted on the hinge pin and is located between the plate 15 and one of the plates 17. In the construction shown, the slide 3 is driven rearwards, on firing, by a gas piston 41 and, by means of a rod 29 pivoted to it at 31, compresses the return spring 4. During such movement the firing hammer 51 is cocked and is held cocked by the lever 11; upon the return movement a shoulder on the slide rocks the lever 11 and, assuming the trigger 62 is still pressed, thereby releases the hammer. The locking member 12 hooks on to a lug 13 in the breech casing and is slid to the rear, for unlocking, by a member 100 which is moved by rotation of a pivoted member 14. When the butt is swung downwards, Fig. 2, the cover 8, which is of sheet metal with flanges 38 engaging grooves in the breech casing, may be withdrawn to the rear.
