    • 384,426. Rollers for drawing, spinning, and like machines. COOK, H., 6, Tennant Street, West Bowling, and OGDEN, W., 29, Undercliffe Street, both in Bradford, Yorkshire. Nov. 26, 1931, No. 32771. [Class 120 (ii).] In drawing, spinning and like rollers comprising the combination of a boss B and an unbroken ring C of cork or cork composition, the ring is smaller than the external boss and is forced on to the boss and attached thereto by cement. The face of the roller boss may be knurled or may be covered with fabric, canvas or the like to form a key for the cement and the edge B of the boss is chamfered to help the forcing on of the ring. This is performed by a machine comprising a stand A, Fig. 4, with an arm A mounted on an upright A and carrying a member A to engage one end of the axle B3 of the roller. A member A attached to the stand and downwardly movable against spring pressure engages the other end of the axle and is surrounded by a cup-shaped ring R of suitable section adapted to carry the cork &c., ring C. The ring R may be heated. A rod D with stops D , D regulates the movement of the arm A which is operated by a lever L through links L , L against the action of a spring S. Specifications 215,303 and 284,598, [both in Class 120 (ii), Spinning, twisting, &c.], are referred to.

    • 316,345. Wood, W. O. Dec. 22, 1928. Road-traffic signals on vehicles. -A signalling device of the stencil type having flaps for covering and uncovering the signals has a double stencil 1, 2 which has cut in it identification letters 4 and numerals 3, signalling signs 6, 7, 8, and a circular hole 5, and has inserted between its parts a sheet of white translucent celluloid 9 which is perforated and covered with a translucent piece of red celluloid 10 where it coincides with the circular hole and which has pieces of red translucent celluloid behind it where the signalling signs occur. A frame 1L, attached to the rear of the stencil, carries a reflector box 12 having a recess 13 containing an electric lamp holder and lamp. Three separate oscillatable flaps 14, 15, 16 are hinged at the top to the stencil 1 by means of a spindle 31 and are independently operated by crank levers 37 oscillatably mounted on a spindle 38 and connected by links 39 to the lower parts of the flaps. Each crank lever is connected to a cable or Bowden wire control 17, 18, 19 or to a rod whereby it can be independently operated. When illuminated from the front the signals appear in white and therefore it is not necessary to light the lamp during daylight. In a modified construction the links and crank levers are replaced by arms fixed to the tops of the flaps.

    • 7799. Northorpe, W., and Smith, F. W. O. April 13. Sale apparatus.-The object is to provide an apparatus adapted to deliver packets in order, but to indicate the description of the article delivered by a hand or pointer revolved apparently haphazard. For this purpose the hand or pointer receives a cumulative rotation from successive turns of more than one revolution, and consequently it does not point to consecutive divisions of the dial. Actuating-mechanism.-The band r is on one of the wheels of a train n, o, p, q, starting from the loose shaft of a barrel i which is connected by a chain to a spring h and to a similar barrel f made to turn after prepayment by the handle on a geared shaft c. An arm projecting from the barrel bears a pawl j, engaging a double cam k fast on the wheel. Two pawls x, y, engaging a pin and its duplicate on the wheel respectively, prevent reversal and improper rotation, the latter being lifted by the pawl arm just before it takes hold of the cam. Delivery mechanism.-The articles are removed one by one from the bottom of a pile in a chamber 5 by a slide 6 with a drop flap 7, which is reciprocated with a connecting-rod 11 from a crank-pin on the barrel geared to the handle.
