    • An improved process for the preparation of a fiber-reactive dyestuff of the xanthylium-9-phenyl-2'-sulfonate series which contains in the 3position an amino radical of the formula -NR1R2 in which R1 and R2 each are hydrogen or optionally substituted alkyl, and containing in 6-position an amino radical of the formula in which R3 is hydrogen or alkyl, A is a mononuclear or binuclear aromatic radical, m is 0, 1 or 2, n is 0 or 1 and p is 1 or 2, and in which .gamma. is a fiber-reactive group of the formula (2) or (3) wherein R4 is hydrogen or alkyl, q is 0 or 1 and Z is hydroxy, sulfato, phosphato, halogen or an acyloxy group, in which process 1 mol of a 3,6-dihalogeno-xanthylium-9-phenyl-2'-sulfonate compound is reacted step wise with at least 1 mol of each of two amino compounds corresponding to the required 3- and 6substituents in the dyestuff, in a purely organic medium, the monocondensation product first formed being subsequently reacted, after neutralizing the acid formed, with the second amino compound, the reactions being carried out between about 70 and about 200.degree.C in the presence of an acid-binding agent, and the diamino-xanthylium compound thus formed is optionally esterified in the .beta.-hy-droxy-ethylsulfone group by means of a sulfatizing, a phosphorylating, a halogenating or an acylating agent, the esterified dyestuff thus obtained being optionally converted into a dyestuff containing the group of formula (2) by treating it with an alkaline agent, characterized by carrying out the reactions mentioned without isolating any intermediate in a solvent containing carbonamide groups, or in a polar aprotic solvent, whereby precipitation and drying of said diamino-xanthylium compound is no longer necessary. This implies a considerable saving of time, the amounts of esterification agents are considerably reduced, and smaller reaction volumes can be used so that the space/time yield as well as the yields of dyestuffs are increased substantially.
