摘要： A carbon nanostructure's geometry and electrical characteristics can be controlled. A method for processing a carbon nanostructure according to the present invention includes the steps of: preparing a carbon nanostructure (e.g., a carbon nanotube (1)) (a CNT preparation step); and exposing the carbon nanotube (1) to an energy beam (e.g., an electron beam) while vibrating the carbon nanotube (1) (an exposure step). This facilitates modifying the carbon nanotube (1) in length and electrical characteristics.

摘要： A method for cutting single-wall carbon nanotubes involves partially fluorinating single-wall carbon nanotubes and pyrolyzing the partially fluorinated nanotubes in an inert atmosphere or vacuum up to about 1000°C. The nanotubes are optionally purified before cutting. The partial fluorination involves fluorinating the nanotubes to a carbon-fluorine stoichiometry of CFx, where x is up to about 0.3. The invention also relates to the derivatization of fluorinated and cut single-wall carbon nanotubes. The single-wall carbon nanotubes can be cut to any length depending on the fluorination and pyrolysis conditions. Short nanotubes are useful in various applications, such as field emitters for flat panel displays and as 'seeds' for further nanotube growth.

摘要： Template-guided growth of carbon nanotubes using anodized aluminum oxide nanopore templates provides vertically aligned, untangled planarized arrays of multiwall carbon nanotubes with Ohmic back contacts. Growth by catalytic chemical vapor deposition results in multiwall carbon nanotubes with uniform diameters and crystalline quality, but varying lengths. The nanotube lengths can be trimmed to uniform heights above the template surface using ultrasonic cutting, for example. The carbon nanotube site density can be controlled by controlling the catalyst site density. Control of the carbon nanotube site density enables various applications. For example, the highest possible site density is preferred for thermal interface materials, whereas, for field emission, significantly lower site densities are preferable.

The carbon nanotubes substantially extend along a first direction. A patterned carbon nanotube film is formed by patterning the original carbon nanotube film to define at least one row of through holes arranged in the original carbon nanotube film along the first direction. Each row of through holes includes at least two spaced through holes. The patterned carbon nanotube film is treated with a polymer solution. The patterned carbon nanotube film is shrunk into the carbon nanotube composite film.
