    • A user of a meta-search engine submits a query formulated with operators defining relationships between keywords. Information sources are selected for interrogation by the user or by the meta-search engine. If necessary, the query is translated for each selected source to adapt the operators of the query to a form accepted by that source. The query is submitted to each selected source and answers are retrieved from each source as a summary of each document found that satisfies the query. The answers are post-filtered from each source to determine if the answers satisfy the originally formulated query. Answers that satisfy the query are displayed as a list of selectable document summaries. The analysis includes computing a subsumption ratio of filtered answers to answers received that satisfy a translated query. The subsumption ratio is used to improve the accuracy of subsequent queries submitted by the user to the meta-search engine.

    • A method and apparatus for efficiently classifying and categorizing data objects such as electronic text, graphics, and audio based documents within very-large-scale hierarchical classification trees is provided. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a first node of a plurality of nodes of a subject hierarchy is selected. Previously classified data objects corresponding to a selected first node of a subject hierarchy as well as any associated sub-nodes of the selected node are aggregated to form a content class of data objects. Similarly, data objects corresponding to sibling nodes of the selected node and any associated sub-nodes of the sibling nodes are then aggregated to form an anti-content class of data objects. Features are then extracted from each of the content class of data objects and the anti-content class of data objects to facilitate characterization of said previously classified data objects.

    • Disclosed is a system for performing online data queries. The system for performing online data queries is a distributed computer system with a plurality of server nodes each fully redundant and capable of processing a user query request. Each server node includes a data query cache and other caches that may be used in performing data queries. The data query, as well as request allocation, is performed in accordance with an adaptive partitioning technique with a bias towards an initial partitioning scheme. Generic objects are created and used to represent business listings upon which the user may perform queries. Various data processing and integration techniques are included which enhance data queries. An update technique is used for synchronizing data updates as needed in updating the plurality of server nodes. A multi-media data transfer technique is used to transfer non-text or multi-media data between various components of the online query tool. Optimizations for searching, such as the common term optimization, are included for those commonly performed data queries. Also disclosed is a system for targeting advertisements that are displayed to a user of the system.

    • A method for securing and processing sparse access control list (ACL) data in a relational database used as a backing store for a hierarchical-based directory service. The sparse ACL data is secured in a plurality of tables. An owner table stores data objects with explicitly set ACLs. A propagation table stores data on whether individual ACLs are inherited by descendant objects. A permissions table stores data regarding permissions which a user may perform on an object. A source table stores data for a set of ancestor objects having respective ACLs for each of a set of descendant objects. Preferably, the tables are stored in the relational database together with the objects. For a given object, data in the tables is used to determine the given object's entry owner and ACL. The inventive technique has particular applicability in a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directory service having a relational database as a backing store.
