    • 2894. Martin, J. H. Feb. 5. Endless - chain motors. - An endless - chain water-current motor is fitted with vanes that feather when out of the water, lateral deflectors for directing the stream upon the vanes, and a floating forward deflector for deflecting floating debris. The motor proper comprises two parallel floats 1, 2, carrying a framework upon which four sprocket-wheels 6 carrying two chains 8. These chains are connected across by spindles 7 carrying V-shaped vanes 18. A ratchet mechanism on each vane prevents backward rotation. Forward rotation, for feathering and unfeathering, is effected at each end of the machine by a standing ratchet engaging a pinion carried on each spindle 7. The chains have lateral wheels 28, Fig. 3, running between rails 25, 26. Deflecting-boards 34 direct the lateral stream upon the vanes. Power is taken off the sprocket-wheel spindle 4. The motor is chained to a device comprising two floats 43 carrying a framework wherein is a shallow float 50 capable of vertical movement. The float 50, while too shallow to interfere materially with the flow of the stream, suffices to deflect any floating matter likely to injure the vanes.

    • 10,085. Wallace, J. H., and Hilton, A. G. May 15. Windows.-Fig. 1 shows a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 a transverse section of a spring balance for a sliding sash. A broad spiral spring c is inserted loosely in a toothed barrel b , and the ends c , c are hooked or turned b a c k to engage with shoulders or camprojections c , a' of the barrel and a fixed axle a . The outer hooked end of the spring is preferably thickened, the inner end may be reduced in width, and the axle may be fixed to, or cast in one piece with, the casing a'. The toothed barrel gears with a rack on the sash, and the spring is wound up when the sash is lowered. The barrel can slide freely over the outer end of the spring in one direction when the spring is unwound, but the projection c engages with the hook c' when the motion of the barrel is reversed. A portion a of the casing is detachable, and is made with an opening to receive a collar b of the barrel. In a modification, shown in Fig. 7, the barrel is formed with three projections and the axle with two projections, and a pawl c is pivoted to the outer end of the spring.

    • 686,753. Delivering measured quantities of liquid. HARRISON, K. J., ABBEY, C. B., SKELTON, J. L., and LINER CONCRETE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. June 1, 1950 [June 1, 1949]. No. 14679/49. Class 106 (v). A float controlled measuring tank comprises a valve member 7a acting on a seating 5 in the inflow pipe 4, the valve member being mounted on a vertically movable guide rod 7 which is controlled by a float 8 movable with respect to the rod, and means, for example the linkwork 9, 11, so that when the outlet valve 12 is opened by the pull rod 13 the inlet valve is. closed. The float may be threaded on to the rod 7 and the rod rotated by means of spur wheels 15, 16 and a handwheel 19 or remotely by a shaft 22, or the float may be slidable on the rod 7 and a lever or cam interposed between them. A vertical strip 24 engages in a slot 1a covered by a viewing glass 23, to serve as an indicator and constrain the float against rotation. Alternatively the depth of water may be indicated by a pointer driven by a train of gears from the handle 19 or by a rod attached to the float which passes through the top of the tank and carries a pointer arm traversing a scale on the side of the tank. Specification 686,793 is referred to.
