    • An automatic mechanical pencil has a tubular piece removably connected to a barrel cylinder, and a slider for frictionally holding a lead and being movably disposed in a front portion of the tubular piece. A lead chuck is disposed in the barrel cylinder for releasably holding the lead so as to allow forward movement of the lead but prevent backward movement thereof. A first spring urges the slider forward and the lead chuck backward so that when a writing front end of the writing instrument is released from a writing surface, the lead is automatically fed by urging the slider forward. A lead reservoir is disposed rearwardly of the lead chuck to supply the lead to the lead chuck. The lead reservoir has a reservoir main body, a pipe holder connected to a front end of the reservoir main body and having a guide projection, and a stopper disposed around an outer periphery of the pipe holder and having a receiving groove engageable with the guide projection. A second spring urges the reservoir main body and the stopper of the lead reservoir so that the reservoir main body and the stopper move relatively in the axial direction of the barrel cylinder.

    • A mechanical pencil includes a barrel, a lead feeding mechanism disposed in the barrel to tighten and feed a lead, and a lead holder disposed between the lead feeding mechanism and a tip end of the barrel. The lead holder includes a through hole through which the lead penetrates, holding portions for holding the lead, and a contact portion for contacting an inner peripheral face of the barrel. The holding portions include a first holding portion at a front portion of the lead holder and a second holding portion at a rear portion of the lead holder. When a length of the lead becomes shorter than a distance between the lead feeding mechanism and the tip end of the barrel, the first holding portion holds the short lead and the second holding portion holds a next lead tightened by the lead feeding mechanism.

    • A lead feed mechanism for a mechanical pencil, in which a lead protruded by a certain length from a lead protection pipe housed in a bottom member attached at the bottom of the pencil is fed together with the pipe, and which comprises a lead chuck which is split in plural parts along the axis of the pencil and whose bottom sections pinch the lead on its outside circumferential surface. A sleeve contains the lead chuck so as to urge the lead chuck upwards by an elastic member. The sleeve includes an engaging portion provided on the inside circumferential surface of the top portion of the sleeve and engaged with an engaging portion provided on the outside circumferential surface of a bottom bearer for a lead pipe in which a spare lead is housed. A frame is provided around the sleeve which is fitted on the bottom with a pushing member which bears by the open top of the frame an elastic member provided between the bottom bearer and the frame. A slider is fitted in a cylindrical fixed member fixed in the bottom member so that the slider can be slid by the action of an elastic member. The top of the slider is separated at a prescribed distance from the pushing member.

The lead-feeding may be easily accomplished merely by pressing operation without changing the grip of the outer tube 1.
