    • The subject invention is related to a cutting apparatus for forming individual battery grid structures from a sheet material having cut out portions thereon, said apparatus comprising spaced apart first and second rotatable means, a plurality of leading knives carried by said first means, a plurality of trailing knives carried by said second means, said knives arranged to cut transversely of said material forming shear lines from the edge of said sheet material to the cut out portions of said material, a plurality of blades carried by said first and second rotatable means for cutting longitudinally of said sheet material along a slit line between adjacent cut out portions of said sheet material, said knives and blades being spaced about the periphery of said first and second rotatable means and arranged to cooperate to sectionalize and form thereby individual battery grid structures from said sheet material.

    • Battery grid plate castings are trimmed in a two-step operation. Each plate moves flat along a horizontal or inclined path against a first stop bar. One of two trim blades on a reciprocating upper die block then shears flashing from the leading end of the plate during a downward stroke of the die. Then the stop bar raises during the upward stroke of the die, and the plate moves forwardly against a second stop. Upon the next downward die stroke the second trim blade shears flashing from the trailing edge of the plate. During the next upward stroke, the fully trimmed plate moves forwardly onto a stacking device. As the leading end of one plate is trimmed at the first trim station, the trailing end of a preceding plate is trimmed at the second trim station. The second stop is easily moved to different stop positions along the path of travel of the plates to change the distance between such stop and the second trim blade and thereby enable trimming plates of different lengths without changing dies.

    • Apparatus for trimming battery grids supplied to a downwardly inclined track. First stop means is spaced downwardly from the upper end of the track and includes first support means for supporting the first stop means for movement between a blocking and unblocking position so that the battery grid is blocked thereby when the first stop means is in the blocking position and releases the grid when the first stop means is in the unblocking position. Second stop means is spaced an adjustable distance downwardly along the track from the first stop means. The second stop means includes support means for supporting the second stop means for movement between blocking and unblocking positions so that a grid is blocked and held between the first and second stop means when same is in the blocking position and releases the grid when same is in the unblocking position. Carriage means and drive means therefor are mounted on a guide for movement therealong. Rotating saw means are supported on the carriage and adapted to engage and thereby trim the grid as the carriage is driven along the guide. Clamping means are positioned between the first and second stop means and movable between open and closed positions and is adapted to clamp the grid in a fixed position during the trimming procedure. Control means are provided for causing a movement of the carriage means along the guide only when the clamp means is in the closed position.
