    • PURPOSE: To reduce the friction between chips and an insert and thus prolong the lift of its cutting edges by extending a number of depressions to form an angle of 5 to 45 degrees with a line perpendicular to the cutting edges. CONSTITUTION: On use of a cutting insert 10, the chips that are released from a workpiece slide along a chip upsetting face 17. During this, a group of depressions 21 upset the chips and form runners in the transition part made by the chip upsetting face 17 and a chip forming face 19. This type of deforming action raises the chip temperature to reduce the friction between the chips and the insert 10. The curved form of the chip forming face 19 also suppresses the contact of the chips and the insert 10 to lower the heat conduction from the chips to the insert 10. Further suppression of the contact of the chips and the insert 10 needs the angle α in the range of 5 to 45 degrees these depressions 21 form with a line perpendicular to cutting edges 18 of the insert 10.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coated cutting tool insert used in metal machining, and to provide a texture-cured α-AlOlayer.SOLUTION: The alumina layer is characterized in improved toughness and adheres to a substrate covering its all functional part. A coated film is constituted of one or more heat resistance layers including at least one layer to be texture-cured α-AlOformed of columnar particles having a length/width ratio of 2 to 12 and having a 2 to 20 μm thickness. The α-AlOhas a strong (0006) diffraction peak. Improved wear resistance and toughness are obtained when a texture coefficient (TC) in a (0006) reflection is larger than 1.33 ln h+2 (h denotes the thickness of the α-AlOlayer) and when the surface of the α-AlOlayer is subjected to wet blast until an Ra value lower than 1 μm. An alumina layer having a strong (0001) texture is applied to a bonding phase enrichment cemented carbide substrate. This combination contributes to an increase of wear resistance and toughness.

SOLUTION: The coated cutting tool comprises a cemented carbide body coated with α-Al 2 O 3 of (006) orientation. The cemented carbide body contains metal forming 4.5-6.5 wt.% of Co and 3-10 wt.% of cubic carbide. A value S is 0.77-0.92 and coercive force is 10-20 kA/m. Thickness of α-Al 2 O 3 layer is within a range of 7-12 μm, and the layer is composed of columnar crystal grains having a ratio of length/width within a range of 2-12 and formed on an MTCVD Ti(C, N) layer having thickness of 4-12 μm by evaporation. An Alumina layer is oriented (006). In the tool with black and shining appearance, the alumina layer becomes the uppermost layer and Ra is made to be less than 1 μm by wet blasting.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a covered cutting tool insert and a texture hardened α-Al 2 O 3 layer to be used in metal machining. SOLUTION: This alumina layer featured in the improved toughness is bonded to a substrate for covering the whole functional portions. A coat is provided with one or more types of heatproof layers including at least one layer which is the texture hardened α-Al 2 O 3 having a thickness between 2 μm and 20 μm composed of columnar grains having a length/breadth ratio between 2 and 12. The α-Al 2 O 3 shows a strong (0006) diffraction peak. The improved wear resistance and toughness are obtained when the texture coefficient (TC) on a (0006) reflection is greater than 1.331nh+2, where h is the thickness of the α-Al 2 O 3 layer, and the surface of the α-Al 2 O 3 layer is wet-blasted up to an Ra value of 1 μm or less. The alumina layer with a strong (0001) texture is applied to on a blender phase enrichment hard metal substrate. The combination contributes to enhancement of wear resistance and toughness.
