    • An electronic article surveillance tag features a spindle assembly which anchors and retains a set of ball bearings which are used to clutch and retain the shaft of a tack (24). The spindle (16) features an operational tab which may be contacted by the appropriate probe to turn the spindle (16) about a central axis. The spindle (16) is seated in a retaining means with a graduated lip around the perimeter. The turning of the spindle (16) serves to raise a portion of the spindle (16) from the retaining means, loosening the ball bearing grip on the shaft of the tack. The electronic article surveillance tga may be used with either a smoothed or grooved tack (24) shaft and may be operated by either mechanical probe actuation or by the use of a magnetic detachment means applied to the spindle (16).

    • Fabrication of a micro mirror array having a hidden hinge that is useful, for example, in a reflective spatial light modulator. In one embodiment, the micro mirror array is fabricated from a substrate that is a first substrate of a single crystal material. Cavities are formed in a first side of the first substrate. Separately, electrodes and addressing and control circuitry are fabricated on a first side of a second substrate. The first side of the first substrate is bonded to the first side of the second substrate. The sides are aligned so the electrodes on the second substrate are in proper relation with the mirror plates that will be formed on the first substrate and that the electrodes will control. The first substrate is thinned to a pre­determined, desired thickness, a hinge is etched, a sacrificial material is deposited, the upper surface of the first substrate is planarized, a reflective surface is deposited to cover the hinge, a mirror is released by etching and the sacrificial layer around the hinge is removed to release the hinge so the hinge can rotate about an axis in line with the hinge.

    • A method and system for reducing the complexity of block motion estimation is described. According to the invention, the block distortion measure is determined by calculating a partial error result using a proportion of pixels in the block, comparing the partial error result with a threshold value and rejecting blocks where the partial error result is greater than the threshold value, and calculating a full error result for non-rejected blocks only. The threshold value is a function of the current minimum partial error result, and is preferably the current minimum partial error result multiplied by a threshold constant λ. Another aspect of the invention provides a video transport scheme which exploits the different importance of both GOP and re-synchronisation levels. According to this aspect, an unequal loss protection (ULP) philosophy is utilized. That is, the bit stream data is partitioned into several parts according to different importance, and the parts are unequally protected against packet loss using forward error correction codes.

    • An electronic article surveillance device attaches to an object having an electronic article surveillance RFID label in it. The EAS device interrogates the label for information and associates itself with the label. The device retransmits the information from the label to the broader system and over a longer range than the label can by itself. The device has a motion detector and periodically interrogates the label to insure the presence of the label, especially when motion is detected. The unexpected absence of the label is considered an alarm condition and the device will alarm in those circumstances. External devices arm and disarm the device and detach the device as well.

The present invention further relates to an artificial leather obtainable by such a process and to the use of the artificial leather as upper materials for footwear.
