    • An apparatus for dewatering dredge spoils includes a floating barge having a planar upper surface or deck. One end of the barge, such as the stern, is partially flooded or otherwise ballasted so that the deck slopes downwardly from the bow toward the stem. Dredge spoils removed from a waterway are deposited onto the bow where they flow down toward the stem. A plurality of concrete blocks on the deck form an attenuator that, in turn, defines one or more settling ponds on the surface of the barge. A weir across the stem of the barge forms an additional settling pond at the rear of the barge. Solids suspended in the water removed from the waterway settle out onto the deck when the dredge spoils are deposited onto the bow. Remaining solids suspended in the water deposit onto the deck as the water flows through the settling ponds. The relatively clear water that remains then flows back into the waterway off the stem of the sloped barge after passing through the settling ponds. Because the apparatus and method use materials and equipment, such as the barge and blocks, that are already likely to be on hand, the method and apparatus are particularly economical and easy to implement.

    • The present invention provides an improved solids removal and concentrating unit. The solids removal and concentrating unit comprises a tank, an inlet line, an outlet line, and a sludge removal line communicating with the tank. The solids removal unit further has a plurality of linear baffles positioned in the tank forming a baffle row, with the baffles being positioned in a substantially vertical orientation. Finally, the tank further has a plurality of baffle rows. The baffles operate to reduce the velocity of a carrier liquid behind the baffles. The baffles also operate to form slight vortexes in the carrier liquid behind the baffles and thereby facilitate the downward movement of solids.

    • A blood washing device is employed for recovering shed blood or other sources of blood and preparing packed red cells therefrom. The device employs a gravity sedimentation procedure but achieves a shortened washing period by using an aggregating reagent for aggregating or agglomerating the red cells so as to increase their sedimentation velocity during the gravity sedimentation. The wash period is further shortened by employing a vessel with a flat shallow configuration for shortening the sedimentation path length of the aggregated red cells. A non-turbulant removal of the resultant broad shallow layer of sedimented red cells is achieved by carefully tilting the vessel after the sedimentation step so as to induce the sedimented red cells to slide or shift into a funnel configuration within the vessel. After the red cells have shifted into a funnel configuration, they are allowed to stand in that configuration so as undergo further concentration. As the red cells become packed, an elutriation of the intercellular fluids occurs. The resultant packed red cells are then carefully drained from the bottom of the funnel configuration for reinfusion into the patient. The period of the wash cycle is sufficiently short that a patient's shed blood can often be recovered during an operation and then washed and reinfused into the same patient during the same operation or shortly thereafter. Autologous transfusions are useful in cases where there is a shortage of blood or where the safety of donor blood is in question.

    • A liquid waste processing apparatus having a liquid waste processing vessel for separating and recovering floating sludges. The liquid waste processing vessel includes an inlet disposed on its one side wall for receiving liquid wastes from above and turning them toward an exit disposed on the other side wall of the vessel, slanted downwardly toward the one side wall, and an inclined plate disposed above the exit for forming a shallow portion below the liquid surface and extended along the inclination of the opposite side wall toward the one side wall to define a narrow flow channel between the plate and the opposite side wall which is in communication from the bottom to the exit. The cross-sectional area of the narrow flow channel is made smaller than that of the channel opening. Floating sludges and precipitating sludges contained in liquid wastes from a coating booth, etc. can be separated and recovered completely and easily.
