    • An apparatus (10) and method are provided for cutting a sheet of material (24) into a plurality of segments having curved edges. A sheet of material (24) is placed on a frame (12) having a horizontal support member (20). A clamping device (26, 38) secures the sheet and a first mechanism (56, 58) moves the clamping device and sheet in axial direction. A cutting head assembly (78) is provided with a passively rotatable knife (154, 156) adapted to cut the sheet as the sheet moves in an axial direction past the knife. The cutting head assembly (78) is rotatable about a vertical axis and movable in a lateral direction perpendicular to the axial motion of the sheet. A second mechanism (104, 106) moves the cutting head assembly in said lateral direction, and a third mechanism (130, 132) rotates the cutting head assembly. To produce a continuous cutting line, a controller sends a signal to the first, second, and third moving mechanisms which simultaneously move the corresponding components at a desired rate and distance.

    • Apparatus is provided for removing a sacrificial element (16) from a body panel (2) of a motor vehicle during the assembly of the body structure of the motor vehicle. The apparatus comprises a cutter tool having a pair of cutter wheels (4, 5) defining a cutter gap (6) therebetween. Means (R) are provided for positioning the cutter tool (4, 5) so that the cutter gap (6) is aligned with the sacrificial element (16). The positioning means (R) can also move the cutter wheels (4, 5) relative to the sacrificial element (16). The engagement of the cutter wheels (3, 4) with the sacrificial element can cause the cutter wheels to rotate and cut the sacrificial element. A related method and cutter tool are also contemplated.
