    • A mask and harness system for use in providing breathing oxygen and protection from pollutants for the eyes and respiratory system as might be encountered in high altitude aviation environments. In one preferred embodiment, the mask system has a face seal, a soft flexible lens, a pneumatically-actuated harness, and a regulator with microphone to control the flow of oxygen and to facilitate communications in aircraft flight decks and other aircraft compartments. The system is designed for required five-second donning with one hand and because of the flexible lens, is capable of storage in the relatively preferred on crowded flight decks. It is connected to an oxygen source and, optionally, with aircraft communications. The regulator controls the flow rate of oxygen to the wearer based on altitude and physiological requirements. The regulator includes a valve for purging the condensation-prone moist gases from the lens area and provides positive pressure in the mask. A second preferred embodiment molds the lens and mask seal of a single material having sufficient optical quality and flexibility to accomplish both purposes.

    • A quick release mechanism and headpiece for use with a respirator. The quick release mechanism uses a cam latch pivotably attached to a yoke to control the tension in an upper tension strap. In the latched position the upper tension strap traverses the yoke and, together with a pair of lower tension straps and neck catch, support and seal the respirator mask against the face of the wearer. In the unlatched position the upper tension straps loosely support the mask below the chin of the wearer in a parked position. The upper strap is attached to a circular shaped headpiece having a crown piece fitting to the top of the head of the wearer. The lower straps are attached to a rounded neck catch secured behind the neck of the wearer. The upper and lower straps preferably and advantageously comprise a material or materials having a low maximum elongation to ensure a snug and comfortable mask fit. Filter or sorbent cartridges and caps are optimized to provide easy replacement of filter or sorbent elements and maximal exposure of filter or sorbent material surface area.

    • A humidification unit adapted to be disposed in a patient circuit for humidifying the flow of breathing gas delivered to the patient via the patient circuit by an artificial ventilator system. The humidification unit includes an exothermic member having an outer surface and a plurality of hollow fibers disposed on the outer surface of the exothermic member. Each hollow fiber is defined by a peripheral wall having minute openings large enough to allow a gas to pass therethrough yet small enough to prevent a liquid from passing therethrough. Liquid delivered to the hollow fibers is heated by the exothermic member and the as vapor resulting from the heating passes through the hollow fiber walls and humidifies the flow of breathing gas delivered to the patient.

The speech reception means receives sound pressure generated by a wearer of the respirator mask, and the speech transmission means conveys signals representative of such sound pressure to an external speech transducer. The adapter mates to the inhalation port of a respirator mask and expands the clean air envelope defined within the mask to include the speech reception means within the clean air envelope without requiring structural modification of the respirator mask. The speech transmission adapter comprises a central aperture which is adapted to accommodate the passage of air therethrough and engaging means at each of its ends.
