    • The present invention realizes excellent controllability of print position even when a print head is driven at accelerating or decelerating speed while keeping advantages of fine and high resolution printing quality. A position information signal generator 9 in an ink-jet plotter comprises an interpolating circuit 12 which generates a first position information signal based on an A-phase output of A-phase and B-phase outputs from a sensor 5, an edge detector 13 which generates a second position information signal by multiplying the A-phase and B-phase outputs by four, a selector which selects the outputs from the interpolating circuit 12 and the edge detector 13, and a select control circuit 15 which switches the selector 14. The interpolating circuit 12 takes only the A-phase output of the A-phase and B-phase outputs to detect the edges in the A-phase output, and divide intervals between the detected edges based on resolution indicated by a resolution indicating terminal 11, then interpolates pulses corresponding to the indicated resolution into the pulse intervals to obtain the first position information signal. The edge detector 13 detects rising edges and falling edges in the A-phase and B-phase outputs, and synthesizes the detected edges to obtain the second position information signal. The select control circuit 15 detects the head speed or acceleration of a print head 2 based on information from the interpolating circuit 12, and controls the selector 14 based on the detection result.

    • A printing unit prints ordinary images on multiple sheets of paper, the printing unit further printing at least one cutting mark on one of the multiple sheets of paper. The at least one cutting mark is printed at a periphery of a relevant one of the ordinary images printed on the one of the multiple sheets of paper. The at least one cutting mark is used as a reference for cutting off peripheries of the multiple sheets of paper. A top sheet detecting unit detects a top sheet of the multiple sheets of paper. An ejecting unit ejects the multiple sheets of paper after the printing unit prints the ordinary images and the at least one cutting mark on the multiple sheets of paper. The ejecting unit thus creates a stack of the multiple sheets of paper. The top sheet is located at the top of the stack of the multiple sheets of paper when the stack of the multiple sheets of paper is in a state in which a relevant one of the ordinary images printed on the top sheet faces upward.

    • Apparatus and techniques are disclosed for aligning the operation of the ink jet printhead cartridges of a multiple printhead ink jet swath printer that includes a print carriage that is movable along a horizontal carriage scan axis, (b) first and second ink jet printhead cartridges supported by the movable carriage for printing onto a print media that is selectively movable along a vertical media scan axis, and (c) an optical sensor supported by the movable carriage. Alignment of the operation of the printheads along the media scan axis is performed by determining with the optical sensor the relative positions of horizontal test line segments printed by selected nozzles of the printhead cartridges. The relative position information is utilized to calculate a vertical alignment correction which is implemented by enabling selected ink jet nozzles of the printheads and adjusting the position of one printhead cartridge relative to the other such that the nozzles of the ink jet printheads are properly spaced along the media scan axis.
