    • A lead feed mechanism for a mechanical pencil, in which a lead protruded by a certain length from a lead protection pipe housed in a bottom member attached at the bottom of the pencil is fed together with the pipe, and which comprises a lead chuck which is split in plural parts along the axis of the pencil and whose bottom sections pinch the lead on its outside circumferential surface. A sleeve contains the lead chuck so as to urge the lead chuck upwards by an elastic member. The sleeve includes an engaging portion provided on the inside circumferential surface of the top portion of the sleeve and engaged with an engaging portion provided on the outside circumferential surface of a bottom bearer for a lead pipe in which a spare lead is housed. A frame is provided around the sleeve which is fitted on the bottom with a pushing member which bears by the open top of the frame an elastic member provided between the bottom bearer and the frame. A slider is fitted in a cylindrical fixed member fixed in the bottom member so that the slider can be slid by the action of an elastic member. The top of the slider is separated at a prescribed distance from the pushing member.

    • A mechanical pencil wherein a slider 11 in contact with a lead and an outer tube 1 with different frictional resistances other than a lead delivery mechanism for effecting lead-feed by general knocking operation are provided within the outer tube 1 or a fore means 2, whereby the end of a consumed lead 19 is pressed against or released from a surface of paper or the like to thereby project the lead 19 from a lead guide 12 by an amount corresponding to backward movement of the slider 11. The lead-feeding may be easily accomplished merely by pressing operation without changing the grip of the outer tube 1.

    • A mechanical pencil has an axially elongated hollow pencil body in which is slidable a tubular seat member. A lead-protecting sleeve is axially displaceable in the pencil body between a front position and a rear position and is urged into the front position with a relatively strong spring force. At least two jaws are axially displaceable on the seat and are moved radially closer as they move backwardly from the tip so as to grip a lead that projects backwardly from the lead-projecting sleeve. A relatively weak spring urges these jaws backwardly in the seat. An O-ring is provided in the lead-projecting sleeve so that each time the pencil tip is lifted from the writing surface the lead is automatically pulled forwardly by the strong spring force through the jaws. Similarly forward displacement of the seat in which the jaws rest allows for manual advance of a lead gripped by the jaws and passing through the lead-protecting sleeve.

    • A mechanical pencil has a body with a lead storage chamber defined therein for housing spare lengths of lead, and a tubular lead guide receiving a length of lead and coaxially mounted in the body so as to partly protrude outwardly from its writing end. During writing or marking, the lead guide gradually retracts into the body against the force of a return spring with the wear of the lead received therein and, when the pencil is moved off the writing surface, it is held in place by a locking mechanism until a preselected wear point is reached, then it is sprung back to its normal position. Disposed intermediate the lead storage chamber and the lead guide, a chuck coacts with an internally tapered socket for gripping the lead against displacement away from the writing end of the body. A chuck opener member is coupled to the lead guide in order to hold the chuck open when the lead guide is in the normal position, in order to assure the uninterrupted delivery of the successive lengths of lead from the lead storage chamber into the lead guide.
