    • A linear compressor unit including a reciprocating magnet driven by an electromagnetic alternating field. The magnet drives a piston reciprocatingly in a cylinder in a module casing, which casing also encloses a buffer volume. The cylinder is mounted in the casing so that it can oscillate. The cylinder includes an inlet opening coupled to an inlet passage in the module casing lying opposite to one another but without making contact with each other and forming a passage to the buffer volume. At least one restrictor element is located in the passage to dampen sound of the unit.

    • A reed muffler is provided for an internal combustion engine having an exhaust duct. The muffler includes a generally circular-cylindrical housing symmetrical about an axis and defining a chamber having a tangential exhaust inlet connected to the duct and also having a central circular outlet on the axis, the outlet being defined by a short venturi section. Mounted centrally in the outlet is a generally circular reed array of about the same size as the outlet and having a number of radial reed fingers flexible to and fro from a central position, the general plane of the array being normal to the axis. The chamber usually has a fiber glass or comparable absorbent material in at least a portion of the interior. A diffuser plate is arranged parallel to the reed array on its downstream side.

    • A muffler for a percussive drill is provided consisting of a casing of general prismatic shape adapted for mounting on the drill. An inlet is present in the casing for receiving exhaust from the drill, the drill exhaust port and muffler inlet having the same cross-sectional area. Resilient rectangular baffles are mounted within the casing and are rigidly fastened at two opposite edges to the casing wall. The two other edges, which are longer than the fastened edges, are in contact with casing walls. Staggered holes are present in the baffles, so the gas flow through the muffler follows a sinusoidal path. The sides of the casing tapers down after the last baffle to a fraction of its height and then extend for a given length at the lessened height to form a narrow rectangular exhaust port. One face of the casing adjacent the exhaust port consists of resilient sheet material. The flow of gas through the muffler causes strong vibration of the baffles and resilient face near the exhaust port. As a result, ice which may be formed within the muffler, cannot accumulate on the surfaces and any ice formed is expelled through the exhaust port.

    • An expansion chamber exhaust system operative to obtain high power output from two-cycle engines at more than one engine rpm range. The exhaust system includes automatic or manual means to change the effective range of engine rpm at which it is providing power increase. At least one valve member is provided, which is open in a low speed position, to permit substantially unrestricted passage of the exhaust gases and exhaust gas pressure waves past the valve member, and which closes at higher engine rpm to provide a pressure wave reflecting surface so positioned to reflect a positive pressure wave to arrive at the exhaust port of the two-cycle engine just before the port closes, at the desired higher rpm range of the engine. The exhaust systems can be made with a fixed positive wave reflecting surface downstream from the valve member, or they may open directly to atmosphere downstream from the valve member, and they may include a silencing muffler, is desired.

    • A tubular element conveys fluid through a passage having an enlarged passage portion. Accommodated in the passage portion axially spaced from one another is a pair of plates each provided in the respective outer margin with a concentric annulus of apertures. An insert is accommodated between the plates and defines with the wall of the element an annular clearance.
