摘要： 284,391. Guinness, K. E. L. Oct. 25, 1926. Sparking-plugs.-The central electrode 16 is mounted within a steel bush 12 so as to be readily removable therefrom. The casing 10 and mica lining 11 are compressed about the bush 12, which at its outer end is formed with a hexagonal flange 13. An internal thread receives the outer part 26 of the central conductor, which may merely press the main portion 16 against a flange in the bush 12, or may be combined with such main portion by means of a threaded extension inserted in a recess 27. In the construction in which the part 26 of the electrode. merely presses on the part 16, the withdrawal of the latter may be facilitated by providing a: screwed stem 27 on the part 16, which stem normally lies within an unthreaded recess in the outer part 26. At its outer end the part 26 has a threaded recess which, by reversing the part end for end, may be made to engage the screwed stem on the part 16. Removal of the member 26 is effected by means of the hexagonal portion 19, the transference of any stress to the insulator during such removal being avoided by using spanners on both portions 19, 13. By reducing in thickness the part 20 of the stem below the hexagon 19 this danger to the gas-tightness of the insulator may be further lessened. The inner end of the plug may be fitted either with a screwed ring terminal 22, or with a plain ring over which the end of the casing is turned.

Propagating-appliances. -An incubator or similar device for horticultural purposes is adapted for heating interchangeably with electric or fuelfed devices. The heater unit shown in Fig. 1 comprises a slide c' fitting in the flue a and carrying by brackets c a resistance unit c' connected to leads c . A handle c is secured to the slide for inserting and removing the unit. The ordinary capsule controlled damper b is fitted and the damper rod may be connected to a switch for controlling the current through the heater. In the modification shown in Fig. 7 a sleeve i of insulating and heat resisting material carries a series of heater resistances j connected with a hand operated switch by which one or more may be cut into the electric circuit as desired. This unit may be fitted into the flue by spring anchor hooks n passing through holes at the bottom of the flue. In either case should the electic heating device fail it may be withdrawn and the usual fuel heater substituted.

Hatching-appliances.-Moisture is supplied to air passing through the hot-air pipe G of an incubator from a sheet H of asbestos or similar absorbent material enclosed by a folded perforated' sheet of metal and fed with water from a pipe f communicating with a small cup F. The cup F is supplied from a tank A through a siphon B adjustably secured to a float C in the tank, the float being connected by links D to a fitting d frictionally secured within a socket d' at the end of the tank. The position of the float and so the supply of water through the siphon is controlled by adjustable weights e on the links D. The pipe f is provided with a trap to present vapour passing upwards.

Sewing-machine covers. -In an interconvertible case and stand for sewing-machines, a corner section 1 , 3 is hinged to one side 1 of the case and carries a hinged section 3 which engages by a catch with an adjacent side 3 of the case when the case is closed. The bed-plate 4 of the sewing-machine is hinged as shown to the side 3 . When the sewing-machine is to be used, the case is opened and turned on its side, the sewing-machine swung out, and the cornerpiece 1 , 3 turned back into its normal position. The section 3' then hangs vertically inside the case, and the bed-plate 4 is allowed to fall so that its outer edge rests upon the hinge of the section 3 , the bed-plate being then flush with the outside of the case, which acts as a stand. A container 5 for accessories is similarly mounted.

Regulating; valves.- A conduit connecting the cylinder of a twostroke-cycle engine to the crank-case or other source of supply, to enable a portion of the compressed charge to return to the crankcase, is controlled by a reciprocating sleeve valve N working within an adjustable ported sleeve Q, which varies the opening of ports A in the cylinder wall. A port N3 at the lower end of the sleeve N controls the entrance of fresh charge into the crank case. During the explosion stroke the sleeves N is depressed by a spring N , closing the ports N , N . In a modification the sleeve N is dispensed with, and the lower part of the conduit H is controlled by ports in the rotating crankshaft or crank-disk.
