    • An element protector unit for an electrically heated water boiling vessel comprises primary and secondary bimetals responsive to the element head temperature and each arranged for actuating a respective one of primary and secondary switching contacts connected in the line and neutral sides of the element supply via respective push rods. The secondary bimetal and associated switch contacts provide back-up protection in the event of failure of the primary protection on account for example of welding of the primary switch contacts. The primary and secondary bimetals are partially overlapped in the element protector unit for correspondingly reducing the combined area they present to the element head, and the element head plate is provided with a double-dimple formation having a first portion adapted to nest with one of the two overlapped bimetals and a second portion adapted to nest with the other bimetal. By virtue of the overlapping of the bimetals and their nesting with the double-dimple formation in the element head a compact arrangement can be achieved conforming to current trend towards a compact element and element head design.

    • An electric liquid heating assembly having a dome shaped upper wall and a flat bottom. A false bottom is mounted within the liquid heating assembly and defines a liquid-tight compartment. The false bottom is composed of a top wall and a lip. The top wall is spaced apart from the liquid heating assembly bottom and disposed parallel thereto and has an area substantially less than the area of the liquid heating assembly bottom. The lip depends downwardly from the top wall to the liquid heating assembly bottom. A thermo-sensitive element is mounted within the compartment and includes a resilient conductor, an insulator mounted to the conductor and a bi-metallic strip. When the temperature of the liquid within the liquid heating assembly exceeds a predetermined temperature, the bi-metallic strip contacts the insulator thereby applying a force to the conductor opposed to its bias and causing a contact, secured to the conductor, to move away from an electric terminal thereby deenergizing a heating element mounted with the liquid heating assembly.

    • The temperature of the thick film heating element of a water boiling vessel can be sensed and the element protected against overheating by use of a bridge circuit formed integrally with the heating element and comprising first and second parallel-connected arms, one comprising a PTC component and an NTC component connected in series and the other comprising an NTC component and a PTC component connected in series in reverse to the firstmentioned arm. The bridge circuit develops a temperature responsive voltage across its output terminals where the PTC and NTC components of each arm interconnect. The output voltage of the bridge can be remotely monitored which inter alia, is advantageous in cordless appliances where it enables the heating element overtemperature control to be located in the base part of the appliance. The subject bridge circuit also has application in the fields of motor stall protection and current overlaod protection.
