    • A handheld lid-closing tool and method of use thereof for closing a foil food container having a food-receiving compartment with a ledge extending around the periphery and a flexible flange extending around the peripheral edge of the ledge. The flange is reversibly foldable over a lid removably placed over the food-receiving compartment and the ledge. The handheld tool including a body member which is configured and dimensioned to be grasped by a user, having an outer surface; and at least one elongated, flange-closing channel formed in the outer surface of the body member. The channel has two open ends and two opposite spaced-apart channel walls which are connected together by a base wall to define a generally U-shaped cross section The channel has an outwardly flared broad portion on at least one of the first and second ends and an inner narrow portion.

    • The invention relates to a method and apparatus for conditioning metal container ends and for removing particles and accumulated dust. The apparatus, in a preferred form, comprises a minimum of two and preferably three shafts, each shaft being rotatable about a longitudinal axis of rotation and each shaft having a helical groove extending around the shaft at an outer surface thereof. A drive rotates the shafts about their axes of rotation. The shafts are aligned and positioned to receive therebetween container ends introduced into the apparatus from an entrance and convey them to an exit with the peripheries of the container ends engaged in the grooves of the shafts such that rotation of the shafts causes the grooves to release particles from the peripheries. Associated dust removal equipment then removes the particles so that dust is not generated in downstream equipment for the utilization of the container ends.

    • A tool for closing and sealing a lid on a flexible walled peripheral flange bearing a container by bending and crimping the container's vertical peripheral flange over the periphery of the lid supported on the container's marginal shelf. The tool has an anvil portion, star-shaped portion, a hub portion interposed between the anvil and star-shaped portions, means for maintaining said portions concentrically aligned and means for pressing and rolling the concentrically maintained portions around the container. The anvil portion and star-shaped portions have the same outer diameter and inwardly tapering surfaces mirroring each other, while the hub portion has a width sufficient to allow the ben flange/shelf/lid combination to slip between the anvil and star-shaped portions' inwardly tapered mirroring surfaces, and a diameter sufficient to prevent the bent flange/shelf/lid combination from slipping beyond the base of the arms of the star-shaped portion thereby allowing the arms of the star-shaped portion to remain in continuous contact with the flange/shelf/lid combination during the closure and sealing of the lid on the container.

    • The rim of a pail body is provided with a compound curl for reception of a lid. The compound curl comprises an upper region extending away from the wall of the pail body on its outside, a lower region extending from the outer periphery of the said upper region towards the wall of the pail body and a rim edge part which extends from the inner periphery of the said lower region away from the wall of the pail body and is intermediate the said upper and lower regions whereby a lid applied over the rim with the central part thereof located within said rim can be clamped onto the said compound curl to form a seam therewith. The said lower region and the said rim edge part constitute a smaller pre-curl within the compound curl, the rim edge being spaced below the said upper region so that in clamping on the lid, a region of the said rim edge part is brought into supporting engagement with the said upper region. Desirably the wall has three spaced-apart circumferential beads formed therein, the bead closest to the compound curl being shallower than a closely spaced pair of larger beads.

    • A machine for sealing food containers is disclosed which includes a horizontal base and support means attached to the base for supporting a container to be sealed. A ring is attached to the support means which ring has a first indentation forming a concentric circle with the ring and on the surface of the ring. A second indentation lies within the first indentation. A first horizontally extending arm is pivotally linked to the base for allowing vertical movement of the arm. A vertically extending arm is attached to such first horizontal arm and extends downward and is centered within the ring. A disk is attached at its center to the vertical arm. Such disk has a diameter greater than the inside diameter of the ring but less than the outside diameter of the ring. A vertical sleeve encircles the vertically extending arm and is rotatable about such vertical extending arm. A second horizontal arm is attached to the vertical sleeve and is also rotatable about the vertical arm. A train of rollers is attached to the second horizontal arm which train includes a first smooth vertical roller adapted for moving along such first indentation on the surface of the ring, a second horizontal roller following the first roller and having a radius extending inward of the ring over the first indentation, and a second vertical roller following the horizontal roller having a projection for engaging the second indentation and adapted for moving along such second indentation on the ring.
