    • Vibrating conveyor and separator apparatus (10) is disclosed in which the sum of the momenta of the reciprocating components is minimised and the sum of the kinetic energies of the reciprocating components is substantially constant throughout the vibration cycle. This is achieved by the use of a pair of counterbalances (16, 17) vibrating in the same direction as the conveyor (11), but with phase differences and amplitude ratios relative to the conveyor (11). The counterbalances (16, 17) are vibrated through greater amplitudes than the conveyor (11), allowing counterbalances of smaller mass to be used. The apparatus does not rely on springs for energy storage and is therefore not confined to operate within a narrow range of speeds close to the natural frequency of a spring/mass system.

    • Scrap metal pieces are conveyed from a mechanical press by a shaker conveyor having horizontal and parallel spaced elongated trays supported for reciprocating linear movement above a compact drive unit attached to and supported by the press. The drive unit includes an electric motor having a shaft connected to rotate an elliptical input gear on an eccentric axis and in continuous mesh with an elliptical output gear eccentrically connected to an output shaft. A rocker arm and link assembly is eccentrically connected to the output shaft and oscillates in response to rotation of the output shaft. The assembly is pivotally connected to a support carriage for the trays for reciprocating the trays with rapid acceleration and rapid deceleration at one end of the linear stroke of the carriage and trays. The elliptical input and output gears are identical in size and have the same odd number of teeth.

A gate mechanism 40, 70 includes a flexible gate sheet 42, 82 transversely movable from an opened position to a closed position. A floor opening is provided in the tray floor and a side opening is provided in at least one of the tray sides 16, 18. The gate sheet moves transversely with respect to the tray floor and vertically with respect to the opening in the tray side. According to the method of the invention, the opening in the tray side extends upward from the tray floor a distance greater than the anticipated depth of the goods moving along the tray, such that goods are not pinched when the flexible gate sheet is moved to the closed position.

    • An automated apparatus and method for collecting and dispensing rejected cards (12) in a tray in a card attaching system. Sheets (13) are transported on a moving belt (14). Cards are fed from a feeder (6) above the moving belt. Cards are deposited onto the sheets. When a card rejection condition is detected, a rejected card is diverted and deposited in a tray ()10 having a sloped chute (21). The sloped chute extends down to a lower position beyond an outside edge of the moving belt. To facilitate movement down the chute, the tray is vibrated. This vibration is accomplished by supporting the tray on a roller assembly that rolls on a surface of the moving belt as it passes under the sloped chute. The roller (22) is non-circular or of an eccentric configuration, such that the axis of the roller will experience a vertical displacement as the roller rotates, jogging the tray.
