    • A method and apparatus for detecting the presence of an electrical element responsive to a particular electrical signal and suitable for use, for example, in sorting luggage and the like. In the preferred embodiment, a reradiator responsive to a particular frequency is secured to a tag attached to a piece of luggage. A signal generator is oriented in proximity with the passage of luggage in a baggage conveying system. A circuit is provided which includes a threshold detector for generating a signal when the reradiator responsive to a predetermined frequency passes in proximity to a signal from the signal generator. The circuit includes a digital decoder network for generating an error signal when misdirected luggage intercepts the signal from the signal generator. A package detector unit, including a photoelectric network is included with the circuit to provide an indication that a package was missed when a predetermined combination of input signals was not received by the circuit within a predetermined time after the passage of the package.

    • A sonic article-sorting system for processing passenger baggage at an airline terminal. A particular form of the system includes a conveyor having both a collection section along which baggage is accumulated and a distribution section providing a plurality of distribution branches or stations respectively corresponding to particular flight destinations and into which baggage is selectively diverted in accordance with the destinations thereof. A plurality of diverters disposed in respective association with the distribution branches are operative selectively to effect diversion thereinto of individual articles of baggage being advanced along the conveyor. Each article of baggage carries a tag equipped with an identification responder operative to transmit an ultrasonic signal corresponding to the destination indicated by the tag; and a plurality of interrogation units produce electromagnetic energizing signals adapted to intercept each article of baggage and the responder-equipped tag carried thereby. A plurality of sensors respectively connected with the diverters through control means are respectively responsive to the ultrasonic signals transmitted by the identification responders; and whenever a sensor responds to the ultrasonic signal of appropriate frequency resulting from the identification responder being intercepted by an energizing signal of proper frequency, the diverter associated with such sensor is actuated to segregate or divert into the appropriate branch the article of baggage carrying such transmitting responder.

    • A system for inspecting articles on a continuously moving production line and ejecting flawed articles from the production line. One or more inspection stations are located at selected points along the production line to inspect articles passing through the inspection stations for specific types of flaws. Upon the detection of a flawed article, a reject signal is generated and stored in a shift register which transmits the reject signal to a reject mechanism in synchronism with the movement of the flawed container along the production line to cause the reject mechanism to eject the flawed container when the container reaches the reject station. The reject mechanism is so arranged that it is set and reset while out of registry with the production line so that the time required to set and reset the mechanism is independent of line speed. The system is also provided with a control which can set the reject mechanism to eject all containers moving along the line.
