    • A shim (10) for use in the building industry is formed of first and second wedge elements (12, 14) which are substantially parallel to one another and are of an elongate configuration. Each wedge element (12, 14) is provided with retaining means along one longitudinal side thereof, which take the form of a line of teeth (16, 18). These teeth (16, 18) have the purpose of holding between adjacent teeth a nail or screw which would keep the shim (10) in position. The two wedge elements (12, 14) are coupled together by a coupling element (40) at the thick end of the shim (10). The coupling between the element (40) and the wedge elements (12, 14) is such that the elements (12, 14) act in a unitary manner, substantially as would a shim formed by a single wedge element. The break lines (34, 36) at the top of the wedge elements (12, 14) enable the user to detach the wedge elements (12, 14) from the coupling element (40) so that they can be used separately. This can be useful when a shim of smaller dimensions is required.

In particular, the present invention relates to a distance piece comprising a first wedge-formed element (1) having serrated teeth arranged on a surface thereof, and a second wedge-formed element (3) having serrated teeth arranged on a surface thereof, the serrated teeth of the second wedge-formed element being adapted to engage with the serrated teeth of the first wedge-formed element. The second wedge-formed element further comprises means (8) for receiving and guiding the first wedge-formed so that the distance piece may be operated using only one hand.

    • According to the present invention, an assembly for shimming a construction member to an opening is provided. The assembly includes a plurality of stacked leaves made primarily of cellulosic material. The leaves have a shape with a uniform thickness, defining a pad presenting front and back surfaces. A strip is located on either or both of the front and back surfaces, the strip being releasable to expose an adhesive for attaching the pad to the construction member. The leaves are secured together by a binding to allow a selected number of the leaves may be manually peeled off the pad to shim the construction member within the opening. The present invention also provides an installation method for a door or window frame, which is fast and accurate especially for a prefabricated door or window unit. Another use is with cabinetry where limited access is possible on the back surface against a finished wall.
