Glass furnaces; doors.-In a glass-annealing leer of the kind comprising a series of compartments through which the ware is carried in pans 18 on conveyer chains 15, a compartment 50 is provided at the top of the leer in the path of the furnace gases to heat the pans prior to receiving the ware. The furnace 26 is preferably heated by liquid-fuel burners, and communicates with the three righthand compartments of the series through openings 27, the products of combustion being distributed as desired to the various chambers by dampers 28, 30. 32. The wares are fed in at the right-hand and withdrawn at the left-hand end of the leer, and during their passage are subjected first to a gradually increasing, and then to a gradually decreasing temperature. The right-band end of the furnace, and consequently the initial compartments are heated more strongly than the remainder. Weighted flaps 45 , 47 and sliding doors 33, 34 are provided to prevent the escape of gases; the doors being operated automatically to allow the passage of the pans at suitable intervals. The driving-mechanism consists of a continuouslydriven motor which can be put out of gear to stop the conveyer by a pedal-operated clutch.

    • 978,703. Stacking; roller conveyers. THOMAS ROBINSON & SON Ltd., and R. H. BUCKLEY. May 24, 1963 [March 17, 1962], No. 10326/62. Headings B8A and B8C. [Also in Division G1] An apparatus which arranges timber lengths 30 in fair-ended tiers or bundles on a table 12 comprises a pair of guide rollers 21, 14, either or both being driven, carried by a vertically adjustable carriage 18, and a stabilizing means, e.g. a roller 22, or a pressure pad, which is arranged adjacent the upper guide roller 21 and prevents timber lengths which are fed between the guide rollers tipping about the lower roller until the lengths have passed the stabilizing means. Also disposed adjacent the upper guide roller is a bell crank lever 23, 24 which, when a timber length is passing under it from the worktable of, e.g. a planing machine, activates a microswitch which is connected to an electrical counting device or a lineal footage meter. Displacement of the completed tiers or bundles is preferably actuated under the control of the electrical counter whereby each tier or bundle, when comprising a predetermined number of lengths or a predetermined footage, is displaced longitudinally or transversely of the table 12. The lineal footage meter may be a separate unit or mechanically interconnected with the lower roller 14. Alternatively it may be operated electrically through a series of electrical impulses obtained from a contactor on one of the rollers of the tiering device.
