    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an arc discharge light source that obviates disadvantages of a prior art and thereby enables quick ignition.
      SOLUTION: The arc discharge light source comprises an arc tube, an electrode, and a low-voltage pulse starting aid associated with the arc tube. The arc tube has a hollow body arranged along a longitudinal axis and is provided with first and second ends, the first and second ends having, respectively, first and second joint areas provided with the hollow body. The electrode is sealed in each of the first and second ends, and an arc generating and sustaining medium is contained within the hollow body. The low-voltage pulse starting aid has an electrically conductive member having an intermediate portion and proximal and distal ends, the intermediate portion extending beyond the length of the hollow body. The proximal and distal ends terminate in loops each comprised of at least one turn of an electrically conductive material. The loop from the proximal end surrounds the first joint area and the loop from the distal end surrounds the second joint area.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide light emission amount control technique based on estimation of lamp efficiency as a function of temperature and electric power to solve a conventional problem concerned with light emission amount control of a gas discharge lamp.SOLUTION: A metal halide lamp includes an arc tube 1 arranged in an outer jacket 11. The outer jacket is deaerated and sealed in a glass-made fixed stem member 14 having an external base part 10. A pair of conductors 18, 19 are sealed in the fixed stem member 14 and penetrated through the fixed stem member. The arc tube 1 has a pair of electrodes 2, 3, and each electrode is projected into the inside of the arc tube 1 on each end part position and provides discharge lamp activation based on an external power supply during operation. A coupling part between a conductor 6 and the conductor 18 is constituted by a wire in which the outside of an emitted substance shield (shroud) 13 is arranged being extended in a vertical direction. A pair of optional getters 20, 21 are attached to a support structure part 12 and vacuum in an outer enclosure can be maintained by utilizing respective getters 20, 21.
