摘要： The present invention provides a new and improved titanium metal drum cathode for use in the production of metal foils and a novel method of making the same. The method includes the steps of welding together the ends of a strip of titanium that has been roll formed into a cylinder. During the welding operation some of the weld beads that form the weld are hot peened immediately upon solidification. Upon complete formation of the weld, the formed and welded trip of titanium is subjected to a heat treating cycle that includes a double anneal. Preferably, the strip of titanium metal and the weld metal that is used to form the weld both comprise an addition agent such as yttria.

摘要： A laser system and processing method exploits the absorption contrast between the materials from which a link (12) and an underlying substrate (22) are made to effectively remove the link from the substrate. Laser output in a wavelength range of 1.2 to 2.0 .mu.m (30) optimizes the absorption contrast between many high conductivity materials (e.g., metals) and silicon substrates and permits the use of laser output in a wider range of energy or power levels, pulse widths, without risking damage to the silicon substrates or adjacent circuit structures. Existing link processing laser systems can be readily modified to operate in the 1.2 to 3.0 .mu.m range.

摘要： Disclosed is a method and fixture for applying a thin layer of polymer material to a piece of wavy sheet metal, so that the layer may function as a backer during electron beam drilling. The sheet is drawn to the smooth surface of a fixture using a vacuum, and polymer is flowed across the surface using a curved leveling board, which produces a generally uniform thickness molding. The edges of the backer are molded with a bevel edge by shaped side rails, to provide a relief around the edge of the backer layer. Thus a raised up portion usually occuring at the edge rail will not interfere with the precise spacing which the backer is intended to produce between the sheet and the workpiece holder during electron beam drilling.

摘要： The tangling of hellically-coiled wire articles during bulk handling and shipment is prevented by providing integral modules or beads of fused metal at each end of the articles which enclose the severed ends of the wire. In the case of tungsten wire coils that are designed for use in electric lamps and similar devices and are wound on iron mandrels, the fused beads are composed of tungsten-iron alloy and formed in situ during coil manufacture by melting the ends of the mandrel with a concentrated heat source such as a focused laser beam. The tungsten-iron alloy beads remain on the end turns of the coil during the subsequent mandrel-dissolving operation, are ductile and are formed without embrittling the tungsten wire. Various methods and an apparatus for manufacturing such beadedend coils on a mass production basis using a CO2 laser are disclosed. Since the beads can readily be made larger than the diameter of the coil and be spaced a predetermined distance apart, they provide built-in guides or ''''reference points'''' for mounting incandescent lamp type filament coils on their lead wires and thus accurately controlling the lighted-length of the mounted coils.
