    • A system and method for handling a hose (16), according to which the hose is clamped to a clamp (30) and the clamp is moved on a guideway (14) between a first position in which the hose is retracted and a second position in which the hose is extended. A rubber tension cord (32) is connected at one end to the clamp (30) and at its other end to the housing (12). A motor (40) is mounted in the housing to drive a rope (44) connected between a pulley (42) and the clamp (30). Manual movement of the hose from its retracted and extended positions are sensed by a sensor (50, 52) which controls operation of the motor (40) and the clamp is driven between the first and second positions by the oppositely directed forces of the tension cord (32) and motor (40).

    • A take-up reel (10) for winding and storing an elongate hose (12) or electrical cable (12) that permits the hose (12) to be payed-out at any speed while providing the safety benefits of a viscous speed governor during take-up. The take-up reel (10) comprises a reel (24) supported by a stationary support shaft (32) and is urged in a first direction by a torsional spring (38). A viscous clutch assembly (50) comprising multiple disks (82, 84) housed in a chamber filled with a viscous fluid is coupled to the reel (24). A unidirectional clutch (66) is provided to decouple the viscous clutch (50) from the reel (24) when the hose (12) may be payed-out without resistance from the viscous clutch (50). As the hose (12) is being taken-up by the reel (10), the unidirectional clutch (66) engages the viscous clutch (50) which retards the take-up velocity of the hose reel (24).
