    • A modular block is the key component of scaffolding for use in restricted working spaces such as are encountered in the building of coke ovens.
      The scaffolding comprises a plurality of columns (8) spaced at regular intervals along the length of the working space (9) and each built up from a set of modular blocks (12 to 15). The modular blocks are preferably of a framed construction, injection moulded from a high-density thermoplastic polymer, and structured to give high resistance to crushing. The blocks (12 to 15) of each set are all of the same external transverse horizontal dimensions and each is fashioned at its underside with a depending peripheral flange (16) and at its upper side with an inset peripheral ledge (17). The modular blocks (12 to 15) of each set differ in flange and ledge widths with the ledge width of each greater than the flange width and the peripheral flange (16) of each upper block (13, 14 and 15 respectively) in a column (8) snugly fitting on to the peripheral ledge (17) of the block (12, 13 and 14 respectively) immediately therebelow in the column.

    • The present invention consists of a scaffolding system (1) which is intended for use when working on the roof (2) of a building (3). The scaffolding system (1) is comprised of at least one roof scaffold (4) intended to be positioned relative to the roof with at least one supporting structure (5) comprised of at least one first set of supporting members (11), at least one second set of supporting members (12) and at least one third set of supporting members (13). Unique to the present invention is that the roof scaffold (4) is comprised of elongated parts (9) which run essentially in the roofs direction of slope and crosswise members (10), said roof scaffold (4) positioned at a distance from the roofs (2) surface, which permits objects such as roofing sheet to be moved in the space between the roof scaffold (4) and the roofs (2) surface, and that the scaffolding system (1) includes at least one conveying device (6) by which materials such as roofing sheet (27), other objects and the like may be moved up to the roof (2) and down from the roof on at least one inclined (sloping) plane (20) connected to the roof (2).

    • A portable portal frame comprises a spaced pair of columns (40), each pivotally mounted on a transportable base, locking means being provided to hold each column vertical, connecting means (41, e.g.) being attachable to each column. The connecting means could alternatively be an elevatable working platform (52)(Fig. 5, not shown), which could be winched up or down. The columns may be of lattice-work, and are winched into position using, e.g. a derrick. Two such frames can be erected, one on each side of a road, and a safety net (42) can be suspended between the frames.
